171st Day - 194 Days to Come

At the museum in Cincinatti went into the print office where they had the "U.S. Playing Card" book collection. Looked at the following:
DE LUDIS ORIENTALIBUS - Didn't get much out of it since it was written in Latin, Hebrew, and Chinese. Just about all of the illustrations were familiar however.
A collection of articles from the magazine THE PHILIDORIAN. Nothing about off-beat games, at least none that I wasn't very familiar with.
SOCIAL GAMES FOR THE HOME CIRCLE by Mrs. Cheney. Round games and other simple card games. The only one somewhat unfamiliar was THE WITCH.
Use 52 card deck with a joker. Up to 6 can play. Deal 6 to each player and 7 more face down, known as "The Witch." The dealer then turns up a trump. Starting with the eldest, each player in turn has an opportunity to exchange his hand for The Witch - from which he will discard one card and then play. Each player who didn't take The Witch may decide to drop out. All those who play play in tricks with high card or high trump taking the trick. Each player starts with 20 chips. Get rid of 1 for each trick taken. If take no tricks get penalty of 5 chips. The dealer may exchange a card in his hand for the turned trump.

Something about using one of three cards in a player's hand to affect the outcome. The player's in turn decide which commodity will be traded and after each announces his card they buy or sell that commodity. The cards determine loss or gain. (very rough.)
