26 Sunday - August 1973
Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost - 238th day - 127 days to come

Played THE 31ST HEX with BB. Allowed a player to use a drawn piece to replace one on the board, as long as it fit and did not break any paths. Penalty is loss of two (and later thought that one might be better) turns. Played pretty well.
Came up with some more solutions to the puzzle.

time that "property" is picked, by any player, its value goes up in set increments. When it reaches a high point it then starts down in the same increments.
I suggested having the values printed in boxes, (-) when first bought and going up, instead of having to do the addition. The game runs for 20 rounds and at certain rounds the increments are doubled or tripled as noted by * or **. With my system you simply mark off two or three boxes at these points.
Looked at and discussed WINDFALL, but didn't play it. (see sheet I took with me.) Basically the sum of two dice determines the movement of all 5 stocks in the game. Players buy and sell keeping a record of their buying and selling price. Each stock can only be bought twice - one share each time. To get some kind of control over the stock movement Phil was thinking of allowing the player to set one die at any number and then throw the other. We discussed having each player set on die secretly to arrive at the total. This would require different totals for 2, 3, or 4 players - which presents no real problem. Didn't come up with anything that we really liked. I said I'd work on it over the weekend and probably bring it in for Phil to see Tuesday afternoon.

While waiting at Metropolitan Book Store for everyone to meet bought two books.
THE WORLD BOOK OF CHILDREN'S GAMES. In the section on "word games" there is a game called CABLEGRAM. The section on "strategic games" has a good selection (thro tho there is nothing that I don't know): - ALQUERQUE, COYOTE AND CHICKEN, KONO, WARLORD, TIGER, TWO ARMIES, COWS AND LEOPARDS, WAR CAMP, TERCHUCHU, SENAT (actually SEEGA), SEVEN SQUARES, NINE SQUARES, BLOCK OR JUMP, DERRAH, HASAMI SHOGI, SHOGI (another error - this is not Japanese JAPAN JAPANESE CHESS), CHECKERS, LOSER, DIAGONAL CHECKERS, DAMA, FRENCH CHECKERS, ENGLISH CHECKERS, COPS AND ROBBERS, POLISH CHECKERS, REVERSI, QUADRUPLE ALQUERQUE, FANORAMA, LEAPFROG, WARRIORS, HALMA, BY THE NUMBERS, TABLE (TABLUT), WEI CH'I (GO), PACHISI, MERELLES, THREE-MEN MORRIS, SIX-MEN MORRIS, NINE-MEN MORRIS, TIC-TAC-TOE, BACKGAMMON, ALEA, CHASING THE GIRLS, TOURNE CASE, SIX ACE, FAYLES, PUFF, TRIC-TRAC (not complete), PAUMECARY, RAVA,
