12 WEDNESDAY - JULY 1972
ORANGEMEN'S DAY - 172 DAYS TO COME

Bought the TIMES for the story of the first 40 moves
of the first game of the Spassky-Fischer CHESS match.
Fischer goofed by trading a bishop for 2 pawns.

Called Wally Siegel and told him I had one game (JUNGLE RACE)
ready and another (FAIRY TALE GAME) close. Set up
a date for 7/20 at 10 a.m. to bring them in.

Wald called. He and Arthur are working of a business game
they call CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD. There are a number
of "board members" on a planning board. A card indicates
who they are inclined to, but this secret at the start.
Players move around a track by throwing two dice and
using either one or both. When they land on a "board
member" they can buy influence, the number of units of
the lower die for the price each of the higher.
Wald wondered whether the idea of the wanted me to know
about the secret incination cards so that I wouldn't think
they got the idea from my THE GENTLE ART OF POLITICS; this is an
old idea of theirs. He also asked about whether I thought
that allowing a move of either or both dice was too much
like my game. I said what I really objected to was the
quantity and price aspect of the dice throw, as being much
too much like THE BRAIN GAME. We'll go into it more when
we get together to play each other's games.

Earl called. Discussed the CHESS game, which Fischer lost today.
I told him of my idea to suggest a piece on
historical oddities of CHESS. Read Davidson's
A SHORT HISTORY OF CHESS pretty completely and looked at
Murray's A HISTORY OF CHESS and Gollon's CHESS VARIATIONS.

Made very rough equipment for the FAIRY TALE GAME
and tried to make it by myself. Worked pretty well.

On a TV broadcast showing the hotels in Miami Beach, in
connection with the Democratic convention, there was a
scene of a social director getting up a game of LANDSLIDE.

Wrote to Mike Abrams about his BLOCK 'N SCORE.
Wrote to Phil Cohen. Mentioned CIRCLE CHESS, BUGS & LOOOPS,
NOUVEAUX JEUX D'ECHECS INTERESSANTS, JEU DES CIRCUITS,
KNIGHT CHASE, PARITY, GAMES & PUZZLES,
his writing a column on CHESS variations, my playing LOA with him
as soon as I have a little more time, anf that I am
playing PROXIMITY CHESS and FOCUS with Bill Rawlings.

At WOMAN'S DAY the other fellow was interested in
AGOG (which I brought along) and wants to buy 2 copies.
