21 WEDNESDAY - JUNE 1972
FIRST DAY OF SUMMER - 173RD DAY - 193 DAYS TO COME

Rcd. the check for $18.36 from Xerox for my expenses.
Rcd. the PLAYTHINGS Directory Issue. Ad for Molenaar
included two games : THERMOPYLAE and SPIN-O. 3M seems to
be out of it completely. Noticed CHICANERY by Universal.
Rcd. the game NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION PLAYERS' BASKETBALL GAME
from Midwest Research, but not the one I want to review,
U.S. AUTO CLUB RACING GAME.

Feliciacalled. She may be calling Hallmark and she wanted
the names of the games of mine they are considering -
PAIR OFF and FOCUS. I also asked her to check on whether
Bob Johnson rcd. the rules for SHAPE & SHATTER, DIGIT,
RED LETTER, and TRIPLE CROSS.
She has the rules for TAK-A-CHANCE and would like me to
look at them. I'll be there Friday morning.

Red Simensen called to ask me whether the big game companies
had their own art departments. I told him that I thought
that 3M did, but that I wasn't sure. It had something to do
with an article but I didn't get the details.

Did a little work on writing up AIRPORT for my column.

Started work on SCOTLAND YARD and did most of the board.

Call from Martin Gardner. Someone, an expert on graph theory,
wrote to him with a generalized solution to games of
which SLITHER is a specific instance, in which points are
connected in a continuous path. The points can be in any
arrangement, in any number of planes and dimensions. With
an even number of points, connect them so that each point
is connected to one another - any one. The first player then
plays on a connection line, etc. With an odd number, after
the first player plays the second player then makes the
connections using either point from the first play.
The reverse game where the first to close the line
wins so far has not been analysed.
Martin heard from Tom Atwater that Hallmark would
be coming out with a set of POLYOMINOS. I told Martin
about my games with Hallmark (FITTING & PROPER, etc.)
but asked him to keep it confidential.
Also Martin told me that Edson is suing Piet Hein over
some matter concerning the five puzzles with Gabriel : -
NIMBI, etc. (see 12/27/71).

(cont. from 6/22) [6/22]
