MONDAY 16 JUNE 1969 167th day - 198 days to come
BB typed the letter to Information Resources and I got two repros of the game classification which I sent to them- the repros that is.
Directly to a meeting with Barbara, Sheila (the artist), & Bill Cummings (the art directer) to go over the rough dummy. Sheila did a nice job but we picked up some slips. Then Barbara & I went over some questions by the printer. Spoke to Fabio for awhile. He asked if there was anything with which I wasn't satisfied. They are upping the initial run to 10,000 due to the enthousiasm of the salesmen. The senior editor of Pantheon was disappointed that Random House was taking over the book. I asked Fabio if he had played any of the games and he said he had gone over just about every one of them. He suggested that he, Sylvana, BB, and I go for a weekend of game playing to their country place sometime in July. He will, also in July, arrange a lunch with him, me, and the P.R. people. He hasn't heard from Alex Randolph.
Called Stan Harris to check on tonight. I'll go there Wednesday for meeting with him and Irv Lubow.
The models of TEMPO, INTERPLAY, and ODD OR EVEN came, from Stancraft.
A copy of TRYCE, MONAD, and VENTURE came from 3M.
Called Martin Gardner to tell him that Random House could have a rough copy of the book for him and The Science Book Club to look at by the beginning of August. He was thinking of doing the book in the November column of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN. This must be ready on Aug. 15th. If he gets the material by the 1st it will be O.K. He had a quick telephone call from Hank Simmons. He is leaving Parker, even tho they want him to stay. Didn't say what his future plans were. His July column (probably) will have a GAME which he took from THE JOURNAL OF RECREATIONAL MATHEMATICS (the only thing on games so far). A layout of dots is prepared as shown.
[diagram: dots laid out in 5 x 5 grid]
Players in turn draw a line orthogonally between two dots. One player tries to join up the upper and lower edges; the other the right and left. (It seems to me that it is easy for each to block the other. Possibly I don't have the full infor- mation.)
