THURSDAY 4 JULY Independence Day 1968 186th day - 180 days to come

BB, Dana and I played several games of VENTURE CAPITAL but still were not satisfied with it.

Called Jim Dunnigan. Woke him up in the middle of the day. Nothing doing of immediate consequence. He'll call me next week to keep me posted.

Arthur called about a new game with the HIGH DECK - (later called MARRY). 16 cards are used, as shown, and are set up on an imagionary 6 x 6 grid.

[diagram: six columns. Columns read: Column 1: K (dark trapezoid), V (dark trapezoid), P (open circle), S (open circle) Column 2: V (dark up arrow), K (dark up arrow), S (open circles in flower shape), P (open circles in flower shape) Column 3: (empty) Column 4: (empty) Column 5: P (dark up arrow), S (dark up arrow), K (open circles in flower shape), V (open circles in flower shape) Column 6: S (dark trapezoid), P (dark trapezoid), V (open circle), K (open circle)]

2 play. One player uses the majors, the other the minors. Moves are either a short jump (from adjacent space on one side to adjacent space on other side) orthogonally (I believe) of a piece over the correspond- ing piece in other hierarchy (such as K over V or V over K. House has no bearing) or a combining move along an orthogonal or empty rectangle. Any of a player's pieces can combine with any of the others. A short jump can also be combined with a combining. In the situation shown, [three rectangles labeled K, V, P] the K can jump over the V to combine with the P. The P, however, could not jump over the V. Object is to either combine all your pieces in one pile or reduce opponent to immobility. To record a game all that is required is the piece moving on top of the piece jumped over or the piece landed on. Spoke to Arthur about some questions on AFRICAN CHESS (included in description on 6/28)
