2 Wednesday - November 1977
All Souls' Day - 306th day - 59 days to come
Call from Felicia. Herb Roth and she have set up a date for 11/9
2 P.M. to meet with Mr. Fox who is connected with the Korean
Company that is interested in putting out FOCUS. (It is known as
the "Hudson Bay Division" but she doesn't know name of parent
co. [company] Fox was originally with "J.C. Penny.") She is demanding an
advance of $5,000. They are working on another RUMMIKUB
knock-off. And they are interested in adding to their line.
Before this they have done CHECKERS and BACKGAMMON sets.
Felicia said to bring along anything that would fit into this
type of background.
She called Skor-Mor, and they are flipping over my games. However
they have been very busy, so they are running behind
in everything. SHAPE & SHATTER is their favorite, particularly
Timothy Ashburn's. They are running into costing problems
with SPACE BOXES and TANGLED WEB, but hope to have all of
them ready for '78. They are having a big meeting on Election
Day and may have word by the end of next week - but 12/1 by
the latest. They kind of liked STIX, but it is at the periphery.
They asked her how come BAZAAR didn't sell with 3M. She told
them about all the things did wrong - and the good reports from
Hallmark Gallery, Germany, etc. Also the new name I'LL TAKE THAT
and A.H.'s renewed interest; but we'd rather not have all too many
eggs in one basket.
She rcd. [received] the check from A.H. (see 10/27). She asked if the BALI
report was on the one sent to me (no); it was lousy. One problem
is that A.H. is selling the game for $3.00 mail order while the
stores want $3.50. She doesn't blame them for not wanting to handle
the game under those circumstances.
Call from Loren Dunton. I apologized for not answering his letters
and acknowledging, and explained my problems. He understood.
He is having a book published - on the aged - "The Vintage Years."
I asked how KWATRO was doing and he said quite well. It is being
licensed in the U.K. and Australia. He has gotten another
GAME, from someone else, that also plays in 5 minutes and he will
publish this too. If I have any 5 minute games he'd like to
see them. He will be coming to N.Y. in Jan. [January] He'll come here for supper
then and I'll show him what I have.
I asked if he wants me to review KWATRO, and if so which
edition. He'll let me know when he is ready.
He asked how I was doing and, among other things, I told him about
BEYOND COMPETITION. He said it sounded very interesting and I
told him that I'd send him a copy - to assuage my conscience.
Took his address, in case I didn't have it hand: {Loren Dunton [address]
2nd call from Felicia. She asked if I
had gotten Bill Dohrmann's new title.
No. Told her about my visit with him on Monday (actually this
was in first call). She again said that I shouldn't let anyone
know that I was working for Parker for so little money. She said
