November 1977 - Tuesday 1
All Saints' Day - 305th day - 60 days to come
Called Phil Orbanes to tell him about the contract and check from GAMES.
Busy, and he called me back in the evening. Charlie Leicht had been
fired, and Phil is now in charge of board games and action games -
the latter being much bigger. The reason for the lay offs was
that sales were off- but not in games. They laid off some of the
older, more highly paid executives and kept the younger. George Dunsay
has also been fired; he had tried to stab Jules Cooper and take his job -
and he got stabbed instead. George had a crush on Andrea Green and
still sees her occasionally.
Phil just saw the GAMES ad for THE WINNING TICKET. It has a
light touch, which Phil thinks is just right, with the his long article
on the game. Actually it has been completely rewritten and expanded.
Told him about the GAMES contract and he is satisfied with it. I'll
send him his copy and his check.
He hasn't heard from Manny Lefkowitz about the SPECTACULARS. He is
not sure if he'll be able to have much time to follow up on it - with
his new duties. I'll try and call Andrea Green this week.
From TIMES book review section clipped ad for THE POCKET CALCULATOR GAME BOOK and THE POCKET CALCULATOR GAME BOOK #2. (Filed in "Book Ads Folder.")
Thinking about "Football" from P.E.G.S. To get men back in play - each time a player loses the ball he places a lost man back in play on his goal line.
(cont. from 11/2) [11/2]
That everyone get a $5,000 advance; I pointed out that
Jerry D'Arcey got $5,000 for original ideas - I am adding to
someone else's original idea.
Kay Bartlett of the Associated Press (see 10/25) spent a few hours
with her this morning. She is writing a very comprehensive
story on game inventors and Felicia showed her my games. She
also gave her a BALI game and hopes it will be mentioned. One,
of many, people who told Kay about Felicia was Norman Fabricant
who Felicia couldn't place. I said that the name sounded familiar
(later checked and found that I had met him - see '74). Fabricant
was written up in MONEY Mag. where they said he made $50,000 a
year. Kay said that his inventor friends said that they made more. I
told Felicia about hearing from Kay.
M.B. keeps sending inventors to her - sometimes she hears from 3
in one day. In the meantime Gale Jenkins hasn't been
responsive to her suggestion that she had things to show him.
She contacted Mel Taft and he is sending someone down to
look at something. (What?)
He heard that there was a blood bath at Ideal. I told her that
I had heard a little about it - including that Phil Orbanes has
much more authority now.
