JULY 1974 - FRIDAY 12 ORANGEMEN'S DAY - 193RD DAY - 172 DAYS TO COME
Rcd. his PAYOFF rules from Phil Orbanes.
From "Random House" rcd. two letters. One mentions AGOG and 1914 and asks about marketing a GAME idea he has. The other is a rude demand that I "print" the rules for BUNCO in complete detail.
Played two games of PAYOFF with BB. Played well but it fizzled out towards the end when players keep crossing out spaces.
Played OIL STRIKE! The new layout seemed quite good. I won by reaching 35 points while a number of properties were not drilled.
Thinking about fixing up the ending in PAYOFF [illegible strikeout] Some ideas:
1) When a player has a throw that he cannot use, he has a choice
between Xing out a space or throwing again.
2) A p Each player has a number of X's (4 each when 2 play,
3 each when 3 play, 2 each when 4 play). Once these are used,
a throw that cannot be used becomes a "wild" throw.
3) When a player has a throw that cannot be used, he throws
again. If still unusable, he throws a third time. If still unusable,
then he marks an X.
Called Issy Rothman and made a date for 7/26, with the Soucie's, here. Also he may join us at S.P.I. on Monday. He'll call about 5 to see if we'll be there in the evening.

dice on each throw (his main pc. continuing around
the board) until he throws a 7, in which case he wins
and collects $21,000,000 $2,100,000 from the opponent. Or he throws
2 or 12 and loses and pays 3x the number to the opponent.
If the opponent loses he must get rid of the built up
country. Wald didn't want them going back to the bank
and I suggested auctioning the entire developed country
to the highest bidder. He agreed. This, of course, can bloc
break a players "block." 2 players can form a Cartel,
which gives them rights to try and win commodities
from other players. Complex - and I didn't care for this
idea. In fact it was just to complex entirely to have
any fun. We discussed ways of getting it trimmed down,
so that it could play in a maximum of 1 1/2 hours. Wald
will work on it.
Claude gave us each $5 as a testing fee from Quixotic games. (Last Thursday he paid $10 for BB and my supper when we tested RIP-OFF.)
Claude didn't have RIP-OFF with him so we didn't have
