JUNE 1974 - TUESDAY 18 169TH DAY - 196 DAYS TO COME
Call from Martin Gardner. He is doing a column on writing music by randomization and asked if I had seen a children's xylophone that had such a provision several years ago. No, but suggested the TMA and patent files as possible leads.
He mentioned that Mozart had written music in that way and I told him about Vivianne Meyers (see '73). He has literature from a company that has put out this GAME. He will contact them. I also gave Meyers his number in case he wants to contact her.
He asked if I wanted a copy of GAMES WITH PENCIL & PAPER. (I already have one.) He wrote to Graeme Levin stating that G&P is printing material from his column verbatim, which is a violation of copyright. Graeme apologized and said the material had come from someone who had sent it in as original. In his correspondence Martin mentioned the book and Graeme sent him 2 copies - separately. Some of the material - such as SPROUTS and HEX - originally came from Martin's column by the wording is different - which is o.k.
In return for the books Martin sent to Marek Penszko, he rcd. some books including a beautifully illustrated Russian book of puzzles and the Polish book 50 GIER NA KOLOROWYCH PLANSZACH. I mentioned that I had my father's translation of this if he is interested. He said that he had shown it to Cirker of Dover, sug- gesting that they do a reprint. If they are interested my father might be able to get the assignment as trans- lator - with my help.
I asked about the progress of Pierre Berloquin's puzzle books with Scribner's. He hasn't heard in about 2 months. At that time Pierre and Scribner's were negotiating over payment for Pierre to do the translating.
The publisher of FUN TIME, which is a quarterly collection of puzzles in comic book form contacted Martin and asked if he would submit material. Martin told them he would consult with them - at $100 a day - on where to find the material. The magazine seems to have developed from a different form and the editors don't seem to know much about puzzles. He hasn't heard about his offer yet.
I asked if he had heard anything further about the Xerox exhibit from Lilian Silver. No. He rcd. $100 from Exhibition Management, for his first consultation. If he doesn't get quick payment for his further consultations, he is informing them that he won't meet with them further.
Alan Newman called to tell me that he had seen my name in ESQUIRE Magazine in connection with FITTING & PROPER.
Called Robert Herzog and changed our date to next Monday.
