1 Sunday - July 1973
Third Sunday After Pentecost - 182nd Day - 183 Days to Come
Finished S&T column - CARTEL, INFINITY, TEE OFF, and THE WATERGATE SCANDAL. Mentioned the INTERNATIONAL GAME SHOW and UNITED STATES AUTO CLUB RACING GAME.
Call from Fay Barker. Her son was killed a year ago and has not been doing anything. Now she is thinking of moving to Poughkeepski [Poughkeepsie] (spelling?) to be near IBM. She figures on interesting them in TREASURE HUNT. She asked if she still had my permission to try and market it. By all means. Prior to John's death she had tried to place it and ran into a ban on travel games. (Why?)
Michael Dummett here for supper. (Called first in the morning.)
He promised to send me the missing pages from the book
REGELN DES MINCHIATTA-SPIELS.
Showed him the ad in G & P for the English book
GAMES WITH PENCIL & PAPER. He is interested in getting a copy
and will get one for me.
He said he felt guilty about not getting me repros [reproductions] of the
other books in the Oxford Library but hopes to get to them
sometime next fall.
He told us that Kaplan of U.S. Game Systems, had got Michael
to play TAROT with him - Michael showing him the French
method. After they finished Kaplan told him "This will be
TAROT-TRUMP, which he published. He didn't even thank
Michael, let alone pay him anything.
Kaplan signed up card manufacturers in Switzerland
and France, and possibly other countries, to supply cards
exclusively to U.S. Game Systems.
His trip to Sicily to find out about the game TAROCCHI was a
great success. All leads worked out. The game is played
with 63 cards.
Michael has been having trouble communicating with Graeme
Levin about contributions to G & P. He has published an
article on Arabic Cards in JOURNAL OF THE WARBURG &
COURTAULD INSTITUTES and he'll send me a copy. He is also
writing for THE JOURNAL OF THE PLAYING CARD SOCIETY, a
strictly amateur publication. Nothing of interest to me yet.
Gave Michael copies of S&T #35, 36, 37, & 38. Told him
to just let me know if he wanted others.
Call from Claude about our date later in week.
Michael looked at my father's translation of KÁRTYA KÉZIKÖNYV in connection with his playing TAROT with some Hungarians in New York. He is not sure if he had lost his copy or not. Told him to ask me if he needs another.
