13 Tuesday - March 1973 72nd Day - 293 Days to Come

Playing around with the p&p games I discussed with Faulkner last night.

CUTTING CORNERS - By using a grid (16 x 16 seems good) some extra strategy can be introduced and the problem of fitting lines in tight quarters eliminated. To lengthen the game at least ten lives should be used. Thought of giving a player a score of the number of squares in each area he captures, but that becomes laborious. Another idea is to award, say, 5 points for the largest area won, 3 for the next, and 1 for the third.

A different GAME of a similar nature could be played by drawing rectangles on a grid. This could also be played to try and draw the last rectangle. To make some spots available to one player and not the other, some relation- ship between colors crossed could be introduced.

NETWORK - by making the field 12 x 12 there seems to be ample scope. The second player should still get his "privi- lege, and possible the first player might be allowed one group of 3.

Bernie Newman (who once wanted to publish FOCUS just about the time Whitman took it, and who once introduced me to Shelly Lieberman of Ed-U-Cards) called. He may have another contact with a rich toy company that wants to move into games. He asked if I, or together with NYCA, could supply the games. Told him that he could set up an appointment and I'd discuss it with them, but preferably at least a month a- way.

Told him I was now working full time on games. Took his number

Red [read] the rules for INFINITY & REALM, special delivery. REALM was in pretty good shape, but I found INFINITY quite difficult to follow.

Called Phil, told him about my comments. He'd like some specific suggestions on INFINITY and will call me tomorrow at 10:30

Told him in general about Faulkn

Phil told me that he had seen the art work on the 5 p&p games (WORDS FOR THE WISE, CHINESE CHECK, etc.) and spoken to Carl. Their projected sale this year will result in royalties of about $19,000 for us.

I told Phil about Faulkner's call (in general) and he said that there is no legal objection to my allowing THE LAST WORD, etc. to be used in a rub-off format. But when I questioned whether [illegible word crossed out] Reiss might have psychological objections to my name and picture on a competitive project he agreed that that probably be the case. I said that I'd stick with the Reiss games and refuse to allow my name to the other series.
