230th day - 135 days to come

Rcd. a letter from Tom Atwater, with a carbon of a long letter to Jim Rockwell. Discusses TEMPO and ODD OR EVEN. Also Alex' ISHIDO, CASTILLE, and DOZO. Also Piet Hein's POLYTAIRE.

Rcd. a letter from Al Samuels. He is having trouble costing out the games (TOTALLY and FITTING & PROPER). If he can't resolve the problem, he will let me know by the end of October.
Thinking about TOTALLY and the dice can be eliminated. The squares can be used for setting the problem and a set of cards can be used in place of the red dice.

Rcd. material from SCRIPTA MATHEMATICA (see 7/21). But only one copy of #85.

When being picked up they must all be placed end to end. Instead of the more elaborate rules we used before, a player is out as soon as he drops the pcs. Last in wins. (I think I liked it better before.) HOOKEY - A hook is mounted on an upright pc. of wood. An arm comes off the upright and at the end a piece of string hands with a ring on the end. Ob- ject is swing the ring and get it on the hook. Score for number of times in a row can do it. There is a certain way that it must be swung and twirled to be successful. (A friend of Jerry's saw this in a pub in the Caribbean.) (Jerry told me about this. He intends to make one up and sell it himself if nec- essary.) CROSS UP POKER - Doing quite well. $1,100 for last royalty, at 1%. MB is sending him 4 dozen and Jerry will send me one. POI-PICK-UP - Simple action game of picking "nuts" out a "shell" using a tube with two rubber bands mounted at the end. A nut can be picked up by being forced through the bands and is then kept from falling out. (Showed me a picture.) He left a copy at both parker and M.B.
UPTIGHT (cont.):- Parker wanted to hold on to this but Jerry wouldn't leave it without getting some money.
MARTELLE - Jerry [crossout] thinks he can sell a different outdoor game to PlaySkool, and asked if I had any old ones in my collection. I came up with the book MARTELLE - THE NEW PARLOR GAME, which also has an outdoor version. Jerry was interested in preparing a model and trying to sell it. I'll send him a repro of the book. He suggested 50-50 if he sells it. I thought that
