Met Barbara and Sheila at Bill Cummings office. Barbara insisted that LOA was understandable as done but admitted that my way was clearer. Bill said that it should be as clear as possible. Sheila took my layouts and will fix it accordingly. The other things I picked up will also be fixed. When Sheila completes the dummy Barbara and I will go over it and will still be able to make minor corrections by cutting and pasting. Returned the proofs of the Table of Contents.

Bought a large set of chips in 4 colors (including yellow) at Alexander's. Saw MOD SQUAD (Remco). There are 4 sets of 5 cards, re- presenting four pieces of information about a crime. The 4 sets are shuffled independently and placed face down. Players move by dice throw around a circular path. Landing on spaces allow them to take a card from a specific pile; or sometimes a choice; trade a card from a specific pile; or sometimes a choice. The bottom card of each pile is never taken since they determine the answer. There is no opportunity for deduction, just memory in remem- bering who has cards you haven't seen and those you have seen. First to determine the crime wins.

Called Martin Gardner. He thinks the book is fine. He is interested in whether Lech invented QUADRILLES and I will check with Lech, also whether he knew of one with a unique solution. Martin thinks that Book of the Month might like A GAMUT OF GAMES as an alternate and bonus since his 536 PUZZLES & CURIOUS PROBLEMS (that is, he was in on the editing) did quite well. This would definitely be better than the Science Book Club. He mailed a statement on the book which I should get tomorrow. He was interested in the edible sliding block puzzle patent I mentioned in the book. I looked but I didn't have any further info. He'll send for the patent. Gave him the names of all my published games for mentioning in his November column. A British doctor wrote to Martin concerning Halma and Martin referred him to me. The correspondent also men- tioned Lech's PODROZE W KRAINIE GIER.
