Thought of how to fix up 4-hand FREE FORM and tried it out by myself.
The final (I think) rules for 2, 3, and 4 hand are as follows: -
2 Hand) Use a 9 x 8 field. Players in turn place one of their quadrom-
inoes on the field. The first played piece must not touch an edge.
Every piece after the first must touch at least one edge of an oppon-
nent's piece or pieces. Also a player's piece may not touch a-
nother of his own either along an edge or at a corner. The same
shaped piece as that just played by opponent cannot be played.
Once (provided the game isn't won before) all the pieces are down play
continues with players in turn lifting a piece and moving it to
another location, with the previous restrictions and the following.
A piece cannot be replaced touching the edge of a piece whose
edge it touched before the move. A piece cannot be moved if it
is isolated - has no piece touching it. When a player cannot make a
legal play, he loses.
3 Hand) Use a 9 x 12 field. All rules are as in 2-hand with the
following additions. After the first play, pieces must be played
next to at least one edge of a piece belonging to the previous
player. It cannot touch even a corner of the player's own pieces.
And it may touch a corner but not an edge of the third
player's pieces. When a player cannot make a legal play he loses;
the player immediately before wins; and the third player neither
wins nor loses.
4 Hand) Use a 12 x 12 field. All rules are as in 2-hand with the
following additions. Play in teams with partners sitting opposite
each other. after the first play, pieces must be played next to at
least one edge of a piece belonging to the previous player. It may
also touch edge of the previous player's partner's pieces. It
may not touch even the corner of a player's own pieces or
of his partner's.
Played several games of TEMPO by myself. Tried to get a draw situation
with each player having a piece that can oscillate back and forth, as men-
tioned by Atwater in his letter. Couldn't manage one unless gold delib-
erately ignored silver's play towards one, and gold seems to be able to
avoid it without hurting his game.
Looked @ PAN-KAI & showed it to BB. Discussed the situation since
UNIVERSE is Alex' and we came to the conclusion that I can't do
anything with FREE FORM even tho I think it is different & much
better than UNIVERSE.
Made a tracing of the map of the U.S. from GET THAT LICENSE to use
for STATEMENT.
Started a letter to Warren Buell.
