Friday 18 December 1964 Ember Day 353rd day - 13 days to come

N.Y.G.A. meeting at Helen's. Helen, Bob, Claude, Wald, and Doris (Wald's girlfriend), and me there.

Bob dissatisfied with ULTIMA. Instead of having the neces- sity of always developing pcs. as in CHESS it is better in Ultima to retreat when faced with a complicated sit- uation. Among the suggestions for remedying the drawback that were suggested I liked that of winning the game if king moves across the board. The king is still sub- ject to checkmate.

Bob had a new game (which I later called BLITZ). Use checkboard. Each player has 16 undifferentiated pcs. of different color for each player. These are set up in the first two ranks on [letter crossed out] the side of the player. Move alternates. A single pc. can move 1 space in any direction (includ- ing diagonal). Two or more pcs. adjacent to each other in one line (including diagonal) can move together in the direction of the line up to the number of pcs. in the group. For convenience it is best to move by bringing the back pc. to the front of the line and continue as long as desired up to the number in the line as a maximum. Captures are made by replacement when a moving line hits an opponent's pc. Once a pc. is captured the move is ended even tho the number in the line would allow further movement. In order to be able to capture the moving line must contain more pcs. than the line attacked. Thus a single pc. can never capture. Object is to get one pc. across to the opponent's home rank. If the opponent in his next move can also get a pc. across there is a neutralization & the game continues until one player gets a pc. across not countered by op- ponent getting a pc. across on his next move. Some clarifications: - Pcs. brought to opponent's home rank can not be captured. They may move & capture however. They may not be moved from the home rank. A player does not have to move all the pcs. in an adjacent line but may move one or more of them at will. (Played about 6 games since it is a fast game. Well received.)

Played FOCUS with Doris. I won but she caught on well.

Claude showed us BIG FUNERAL for 2. Each player gets 9 cards at beginning. At ea [crossed out] After each trick the player who did not win the trick gets two cards from the face down pack. Play continues until 1 player dies. The other scores nothing. (cont. 12/17)
