Thinking of ideas for games to use in a newspaper column. CAREEN BILLIARDS. Play on board as follows:-
[Drawing of a 5x6 grid with 4 spaces containing circles numbered 1-4.]
Players "balls" are located at random to start. Players in turn move diagonally, careening off the walls until stopped by another ball or a corner. Count one point for each bounce. With less than 4 players use two dead balls. (To be tried out.)
WORD GAME IDEA (See 8/26/64).
EQUAL. Use deck of cards with kings & queens removed. Deal out 6 cards. Take each card as a number and jack as a zero. Form an equation using all the cards, with at least one operation on the left side and only a one or two digit number on the right side. A ZERO CAN NOT BE USED ALONE BUT MUST BE PUT AFTER ANOTHER NUMBER. Each player works on his own and each scores for the number on the right of the equa- tion. Players may play that after the first player has announced completion the others have a limited time in which to finish. More numbers could be used but it is preferable to limit the right side to 2 digits.
Example with numbers 135560; (5-1)x5x3=60 [arrow pointing at "60" and denoting it as the score]
Played with BB. Worked well.
TOPOGRAPHY (Domino solitaire game). Turn a set of dominos over (either double 6, 9, or 12) and shuffle. Then draw one at a time and place each as drawn next to at least one face of one that is down already. The object is to arrange them so that every number could be connected to every other by a path that goes up or down by 1 number. Going from a space to an adjoining one of same number is not permissible.
PROGRESSIVE HALMA. Play on a checker board each
player having 16 checkers. These are started on the
2nd & 3rd rows on either side. Moves are by jump only.
Jumps can be made over friend or foe. No pieces are re-
moved. Moves can be made to side, diagonally ahead
or straight ahead. A piece, when it reaches the opposite
king row, is crowned and then, after waiting to a later
move can proceed back. It still however has the same jump
limitations. When reach its starting king space it receives
another crown (becoming 3 high) and then goes back again.
As soon as one player reaches the king row with a
