Ray told me that on Saturday's Johnny Carson program at
12:30 they had an ad for ACQUIRE showing a game in
progress and explaining how it was played.

Thought of idea of remaking RED LETTER as a game for
4 to 12 players. Each player has a small layout of
the field. Using a shuffled deck of 36 cards
the order of the letter tiles is determined and all
set their boards in the same way. There are the
6 colors as in the original game, so that there
can be two players with the same color. Eliminate
the forbidden spaces. Also do not use masks.
Starting with the "E" of his color the player
can make any moves he wishes, as fast as he
wishes, keeping a record on a special pad. Each
time he passes thru (or ends on) a red letter which
he hasn't claimed before, he may claim it and
mark it on his pad. Each word formed deducts a
number of points from the player's score. At the
beginning and after claiming a 5 point letter the
points are 1. After claiming a 10 point letter - 2.
15 point letter - 3. 20 point letter - 4. 25 point letter - 5.
If a word is 7 or more letters long, there is no
deduction. If a word ends on a player's own color
there is no deduction.
A player may try for a double score by getting
first an Ao or Bo followed by at least 2 - 5 point
letters, 2-10 point letters, etc. His final net score
is doubled.
Play a time limit. However, if one player completely
fills his pad or takes all 26 letters
the game ends.
There is a bonus (say 48 points) for the
longest word. This is divided between tying players.
There is also a bonus for having most letters
(say 12 points for each more than next highest).
This can also be divided.
After each player figures his score the pads can be
passed to a neighbor for checking.
