FRIDAY 16 JULY 1965 197th day - 168 days to come

Thinking of a 2-person total information card game. There are many ways that it can be developed. The one that seems best so far is as follows: - One player takes all of one suit except the pictures. The other player similarly takes another suit. The 20 number cards of the other 2 suits are shuffled together and are used first for choosing first player and then for dealing out 3 cards as a "starter". These are placed in a face-up row. lapped so that only the squeezers are visible. Starting with the first player, players in turn must play a card to the row. The card played must equal the sum of the last two, or the last three, cards on the row. Only the last digit counts, tens being discarded. When one player can no longer play the other is the winner, but he may continue to add any playable cards, so as to improve his score. The score consists of the product of the number of cards each player has played. Thus it is profitable to delay victory as long as possible. After a hand is finished another is played using the same three "starter" cards but re- versing the order of the players. The one with the higher score is the winner.

Tentatively the name of the game is PLAY-OFF. Some possible variations: - Once during each hand each player is allowed the "priviledge" of playing a card matching the card just played. - - - Once during each game each player is allowed the "priviledge" of playing a card matching the difference between the last two cards in the row. - - - All plays must match either the sum or the difference of the last two cards in the row. (This doesn't seem to result in as interesting a game.)
