29 Tuesday - March 1977
88th day - 277 days to come
Called Felicia. Told her about my trip to Chicago yesterday. She said that she
would let a few weeks pass and then check on progress with Laurence Gonzales.
She rcd. [received] a long letter from Bill Dohrmann. He rejected all of Alan Newman's
things, but said that Alan showed great promise and he was sure that he
would eventually hit. No mention of my things.
Bill said that what is really important is a theme and the circus
circus theme in Alan's PARKER BROTHERS' THREE RING CIRCUS just wasn't
interesting enough to enough people. Felicia said that they (she and
Alan?) were compiling lists of themes. She thought that a "Flower Show"
theme would be great - there are flower clubs in every town and village. I
said that I was afraid that it would be like games on stamp collecting;
people like to do it rather than play games on it. She thought the "gossip
columnist" theme was a good one.
Called Leonard Willett and set date for me to come there on Saturday 4/9 at [illegible strikeout] 9:30. Told him about Aladdin and he said to write and ask them to confirm the amount in writing.
At Calder bought four boxes (25 1/2" x 13 3/4" x 9 3/8") - 99¢ each.
At Weber's bought two 1977 National diaries - 77¢ each.
Rcd. [received] the 6 copies each of BEYOND SOLITAIRE and BEYOND WORDS that I asked Fay Hartog to have sent to me for possible promotion - and to replace some I gave out a Toy Fair time.
Call from Bob Gellman, mainly to see how I felt. Told me of a good order he got for PATTON and MACARTHUR.
From MAH JONGG league BB got ad for MAH JONGG PLAYING CARDS ($6.95) Mentions play by 2 & 3, as well as four. (Discarded.)
Call from Claude. Talked about my trip yesterday. He feels that if I had pushed a theme hard I probably would have a commission to do a game. He wondered if the book IDLE PASSION came up, since it was put out by Playboy. He mentioned a book SNEAKY FEATS which presents puzzles that are standards in a clever way.
Sent letter Aladdin (Don Louge) asking for written statement of my 1976 royalties.
(cont. from 3/30) [3/30]
hand thinking games, Andrea Green says that Parker thinks there will
be a big market for them.
Phil told me about a solitaire he once devised using a deck of cards to
set up teams (what sport?) and then play by drawing a card from
each pile. There were rules for trading and drafting of players
that favored the weaker team - name TEAM SEASON. I noted on the
similarity in spirit to my LOTTO WAR. I also brought up Conway's LIFE.
He asked if could get a repros [reproductions] of the SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN article on it;
I found that I had a duplicate and gave it to him.
