JULY 1976 . FRIDAY 9 191ST DAY . 175 DAYS TO COME
call from Joe Scott. They will seeing someone from M.B. [Milton Bradley] in the not-too-distant future. He was thinking of showing them GROOVE with his new idea and also trying to talk them into reviving HIGH SPIRITS. I said fine an GROOVE, but there is no point in trying to bring something back.
Called Fabio to tell him that JOYCE is really better with colors, if he wants to use it for the cover of BEYOND WORDS.
Called <Phil Orbanes to see how SUPERHEROES was coming. He is working on other things because it is vacation period and it is quite there. As a piece of information he told me that Marvin Glass associates is falling behind in 3-D toys and games and that Ned Strongin is becoming #1. I told him that I had had some dealings with Strongin and that he wants too big a cut. Phil took the model of THE WINNING TICKET to the ad agency and they loved it-refusing telephone calls while they played. They are discussing the TV ads. Phil also told them about SUPERHEROES and they liked the concept. I told Phil that A.H. [Avalon Hill] might be interested in RED LETTER and asked whether there is much chance at Ideal. He said that there is a possibility for '78 - but if I can place it elsewhere, by all means do so. He said that if I can come up with a SAFE CRACKER game by the end of this year it would be a natural for '78. He sees it as requiring deduction to crack various safes-the more difficult ones giving greater rewards. A gimmick for operating the safes would be desirable, but cards would do. Told him about someone (Wald) wonking on a safe-cracking game for Hasbro. Phil thinks that Hasbro will not be in games for several years. Phil has been negotiating with Graeme Levin about his writing for G&P, possibly a regular feature. He asked me about pay- ment. I told him that I get games, etc. instead - but that the payment is rather low. Phil ran into Dave Isby, who told Phil he is happier at S.P.1. now that they are letting him write feature articles. Also things are doing so well that Jim Dunnigan is finally taking a $30,000 salary.
Made the changes in TOLSTOY and DICKENS that we discussed Weds. Also rewrote JOYCE.
(cont. from 7/8) [7/10] Phil F. brought me last week's TIMES magazine section, with an arti- cle on BLACKJACK in Vegas. Phil also said that he doesn't have access to MONEY magazine at his office. [started 7/10]
