22 Saturday - November 1975
326th day - 39 days to come
Met Pierre Berloquin and Jean-Jacques Bloch at Summit Hotel.
(Bloch's wife too.)
Pierre gave me copies of the following games: L'ACTIONNAIRE,
TOTAL ECONOMIE, JEU DES COCKTAILS COINTREAU (COINTREAU COCKTAILS GAME).
I gave Pierre BEYOND TIC TAC TOE (which he said he saw in Brentanos),
PATTON (bookshelf), and TOTALLY.
Jean-Jacques, who has one of his own games - LE MOT LE PLUS LONG -
as a TV show (he is a producer) thought that TOTALLY would make a
good companion game. Pierre will pass on the copy I brought him after
looking at it.
The company that was interested in putting out LES SIDOMINOS,
Robert Laffont, decided not to. Block has a German company in-
terest and showed me a letter from them concerning: LES SERIES
(SIDOMINOS), and LE MOT LE PLUS LONG. (Don't remember details of the
letter.) The company is "Vereinigte Altenburger und Stralsunder
Spielkarter-Fabriken." In Germany it is called "ASS" but outside it
is known as "ACE". The address is 7022 Leinfelden b. Stuttgart.
I brought up that German companies give 6% royalty. Block said
that he was asking for this and that it would be divided 3% to me
and 1 1/2% to each of them. The game will be in Germany & France (I believe).
The contract is supposed to be in the mail.
Pierre doesn't think there is much doing in games in France. When
some companies started advertising on TV others, such as "Fernand
Nathan," decided to go out of games.
Pierre hasn't been making any money from his games, but he
has thirteen books in print in France and is working on the
fourteenth. Scribner's will be doing 100 JEUX GEOMETRIQUES,
100 JEUX LOGIQUES, and 100 JEUX NUMERIQUES as separate books;
he brought corrected gall__ with him.
Pierre was a little apologetic for taking a cut on LES SERIES, but
said that Bloch wanted him to "so that he'd have an interest in
pushing it." He was, of course, apologetic for not writing to
me. He said there was a postal strike when he returned to
France and by the time it was over he just let things slide.
He gave me an expensive - but ornate- plate with a stand.
Bloch - while Pierre was taking care of something else- said that he
is sure that he can get a publisher to do BEYOND TIC TAC TOE in
France. Gave me his card to have Pantheon send him two copies. [address]
DroveAte in Summit Coffee Shop (I had grilled cheese) and Pierre
picked up the tab for all of us. Drove with them in their "tour bus"
to Mama Leone's to rejoin their group. Miro is paying for the
entire group to get publicity for MONOPOLY.
When we talked about Pierre's 13 books I said that I only have
7 of them. He'll call me from Washington Monday morning and
I'll tell him the ones and he'll see that I get the rest.
He asked me about the non chess material in the Hague library.
To Games Gallery to talk to John C. Stephenson (and his wife).
He said that business had been terrible but was picking up some
