Call from Phil Orbanes. He asked if I had the rules for his game of CAR-TEL - THE GAME OF 12 KINGDOMS. Looked thru the box with his (and Jim's) games and found it. His set was spoiled when a box he had in the basement of his apartment house was flooded by a washing machine. He asked me to send him the rules; he is working on something in which he can use some of the ideas, he thinks. (Didn't get any details.)
We discussed the new companies that have tried to make it in games and the only one that looks like it will last is A.H., which does it with their war games - not their general line. And, of course, there is S.P.I. Phil said that what is keeping "Gamut" going is the magic. What a company needs, we both agreed, is one or more staples that go on year after year.
In the discussion, 3M came up and Phil said he'd love to get the line if 3M gives it up. He said that ACQUIRE is the best of all the new games - including his own.
Phil has been studying what sells and he feels that an important thing to have the title tell the buyer something that they can connect with. REALM is bad in this connection. [illegible word crossed out] CAREERS is good. And RISK is not bad.
I asked if Phil had a subscription to SIMULATION/GAMING/NEWS. Yes, but the one I saw there on 11/5 was the first one he rcd.
They rcd. the final comments on SLY from Amway and the money should be along in a month or so. In any case Phil said that he would see that I get the $500 this year.
Call from Felicia. In a long talk with Shephard Bently [Manager, Special Markets Aladdin Industries, Inc. P.O. Box 10333 Nashville, Tenn. 37210] she mention learned, among other things, that PUSHOVER will be given TV in January, instead of BALI which they originally told her would get it. According to Shep TOTALLY is al- ready on TV, but he couldn't tell her the time & channels.
She asked me about the letter to Alidor Belskis (see 11/4). Told her that I was just getting to it. She asked me to send a copy of the letter to Shep Bently. Also I should tell him that the Aladdin games should be in Brentano's. (At present, she says, the jobber & the buyer can't stand each other.)
Irving Kosoff, previously of Brentano's, has opened a store of his own on L.I. [Long Island] She hears that 221B BAKER ST. is doing well in Brentano's. She has been getting orders for BALI passed on to her by S&R. She passes them on to John Stephenson of Games Gallery - who is the only one in New York that she knows of that handles BALI. She doesn't think that he is doing too well.
Rappaport's paid $1 for INTERSECTION (where?) and is selling them for $4. She doesn't think they are moving. They still haven't rcd. the other Aladdin games that they ordered. In her worrying about finances, she mentioned that she has some things pending with Parker. She also has a thing of
