Rcd. a "thank you" card from Warren Buell.
Rcd. MATHEMATICAL CARNIVAL. This is Martin Gardner's 7th collection from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN.
At Job Lot bought 4 containers of rubber bands, 15¢ each. Across the street bought 4 dozen green (47 of them "verdent green") pencils for $1.00.
To Phil Orbanes. We went over my SLY corrections together. Amway won't allow my name on the game. They objected to a hairdo on the box art work and are redoing it at their own expense. This will hold up final payment thru November.
I asked about my trying to sell EMPIRE thru Graeme Levin. Phil read me the contract with Amway and it only covered the U.S. and Canada. Also it concentrated on "game components" rather than "game play." Phil suggested using a board with a different number of spaces, and also a different number of men, and of course a different name.
Carl Eisenberg asked me (actually before I spoke to Phil) the name of the man at 3M - Keith Tuggle. Also if I hear that 3M in- tends to sell out. I asked if they would like to buy 3M out. Yes.
After Carl spoke to Keith he came in to tell Phil the results, which I listened to. 3M removed their games from price fixing this year and it still too early to see the results. They have dropped many items, such as the p&p games, and will not add any in '76. If things pick up due to mass marketing they will move again in '77. If not they will be interested in selling. Their volume is under $2 million a year. Keith has a rag-tag group to deal with: games, food items, and some kinds of tape.
Phil told me that Gameophiles is out of business and I told him about Itemation. (I think Phil said four Generators is out also He also said that Paragon is trying to sell Reiss Games. Phil thinks this would be good for Reiss, since they'd have more freedom with a new outfit. (Why?)
Phil said that Jim Dunnigan was on ch 2 news for about 6 minutes, on the 6 PM segment.
"Gamut of Games" will do very little new for '76. If they do a game it will be Andy Luftig's SUSPENSE. I asked if it was a good game. Phil hasn't tried it but he thinks that the idea is good. A ticking bomb must be located before it goes off, destroying a ship.
I mentioned Stancraft's line: THE JOY OF SIX, etc. This re- minded him of an idea he had for a line - of about 4 - mystery books. They can be read in about 30 minutes and all the clues for logically solving the mystery should be present. On the back cover a tear off label hides the solution - or pos- sibly 3 labels so that 3 different people can use the book. I suggested a "Buried Treasure" and he said he had thought of that too - so it must be a natural. We'll both think about ideas and then get together to talk about them. If necessary some-
