September 1975 - Tuesday 30
273rd day - 92 days to come
Realized that I forgot to list HOLIDAY, PATTON, and MACARTHUR
among the my games in letter to Steve Wilson (which BB typed
yesterday). Opened it to add them and mailed it tomorrow.
Letter from Warren Buell that he'll visit tomorrow, but something
came up since I wrote him.
To see Fabio. Told him that I was working on solitaire games
for the new book (FUN FOR ONE) but things haven't solidified yet.
However, constantly changing pencils to get different colors can be
a hastle [sic]. He agreed and said to do what I think is best.
He said that 31,000 copies of BEYOND TIC TAC TOE have been
shipped. The initial run was 35,000 and they are printing another
15,000.
He had the letter from Elisabeth Brower to Felicia (and I asked
him to have Fay make a repro for me). Nothing can be done now
about her criticisms, but possibly with the next printing. I'll
see what I can do about the VASARELY diagram.
He had two manuscripts that Felicia brought him. One was about
a dozen of Alan Newman's p&p games with introductions to
each. He said that he wasn't interested in things like
FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, etc. but he was interested in the
word games and PRIVATE EYE (see '74). He asked me to look
at it and I saw also HIDE 'N SEEK, FINDERS KEEPERS,
SLALOM!, TYCOON!, DRAG RACE, SPY VS. SPY, and probably others.
He asked One was HELIX, which has players in turn writing
a word along a spiral. Object is to use as many as possible of
the letters at the end of his word to start yours, and the score
is based on how many letters are not used. Fabio asked me
what I thought of the games. I told him that I knew Alan,
that I thought many of the games were very good. He
asked me if I had intended using things like word games
in my book and I said that I had been - but that it was
a very embarrassing spot for me to be in. He said that
the final decision will be his and quite possibly he'll do
both - We discussed the [illegible word crossed out] advantages of a book de-
voted to a single topic compared to one devoted to a "Gamut"
and he seemed to prefer the former. Incidentally Alan
had RIGHT ANGLES in his book, with pcs. to cut out. He also
had cut out dice to be assembled. Fabio didn't like
this and I suggested cards on the back cover to be cut
out, 12 of them with 2 sets of [drawing of die showing 1 pip] thru [drawing of die showing 6 pips]. Fabio liked this.
The other manuscript was puzzles by George Bredehorn.
Fabio didn't care for this at all.
Fabio said that he wouldn't say anything to Felicia about
about talking to me, and that I shouldn't.
Fabio suggested that when I come in November with the
solitaire games I should also bring some word games.
Fabio gave me a copy of BEYOND TIC TAC TOE - he only had three.
Fabio mentioned that Knopf, another Random House subsiduary,
