Rcd. [received] the <u>DARN CLEVER</u> and <u>FREE FOR ALL</u> registered letters.
<br>Rcd. <u>PLAYTHINGS</u> (July '75 [1975]). In Los Angeles, 3M and other
games are supposed to be selling well. The John Ladell Co.
has 3 children's and one adult game - <u>THE SHOPPING GAME</u>.
<br>Rcd. <u>NOST-ALGIA</u> (#183). <u>Phil Cohen</u> discusses draw rules for
<u>TEEKO</u>, with mentions of <u>SCARNE ON TEEKO</u> and
<u>SCARNE'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GAMES</u>. Mention of <u>DOUBLE POKER</u> and
<u>TRIPLE POKER</u> by <u>David Silverman</u>.
<br>Rules for <u>CONQUEST CHESS</u> by <u>Donald Benge</u> with some clarifications
by Phil. | |||
<br>Rules changes for <u>DOUBLE RETTAH CHESS</u> and <u>CROSSINGS CHESS</u>
and <u>SURGE CHESS</u>.
<br>An annotated game of <u>ULTIMA</u>. (All in Phil's columns.)
<br>In "Chess Variants and non-chess Games Results" noticed
mention of <u>NINERIDER</u>. (I'll have to check with Phil.)
<br>Rules given for <u>KNIGHT RELAY CHESS</u> and <u>BISHOP RELAY CHESS</u>.
With <u>Phil Laurence</u> played the <u>CHINESE CHECKERS</u> variation for
<u>DAISY</u> magazine (see 6/28 and 6/26). Used the same setup and
played that an old number could jump over an odd pc. [piece] on line
that added to an odd. Similar with an even. With alternate set-up
each player tended to stay on spaces of one color only. Stopped
and started again with the pcs. Started two of the same color
next to each other in a row. Also used the first 3 rows on one
side with a pc. being taken off when it reached the last row.
Phil suggested getting only one pc. across to win. I came up with
getting one of each of the 6 numbers. This played pretty well
and Phil just beat me. | |||
<br>He didn't like being <s>about</s> able to move a pc. into the last
row. I came up with a rule that forward movement could only be
by jumping. A pc. can also move one space to the side of back.
Played well and I won. | |||
<br>Making an odd pc. jump an even pc. on line and an even jump
an odd would make a different - and more difficult - game.
<br>Played 4-hand <u>DARN CLEVER</u>. Used two round of <s>seret a</s>
"secret answers." The number of cards used was quite
uniform, but I won decisively by being the first to get the
identification twice.
<br>Phil suggested allowing the Informant to lie once during
a game. After thinking about it a while I felt it would add
to the game and would be a challenge for advanced players.
<br>Showed <u>MASTERMIND</u> to Phil & Annette. They liked the gimmickry and
suggested that I do something like it with <u>DARN CLEVER</u>.
<br>Thinking that I could use vinyl on vinyl, with put-on pcs. with
the symbols, "yes", "no", and "different?" [two squares, horizontally orthogonal] would ask "and", [two squares, vertically orthogonal] would ask
"or". | |||
Earlier for call from <u>Claude</u>. Discussed <u>Wald</u>. I mentioned that I
promised <u>Felicia</u> 10% of things I sell without her. And that I have a
contact in Germany, and I told her I'd give her 10%. Claude
