8 THURSDAY - MAY 1975
HOLY THURSDAY - ASCENSION DAY - 128TH DAY - 237 DAYS TO COME
Call from Alex Randolph and made date for me to come to his hotel on 58th St.
BB gave me an article she found in the April '75 MCCALL'S which said that sales of games are going up. Mentions TOYS magazine, CARTEL, THE WATERGATE SCANDAL, THE CITIES GAME.
Letter from Haar Hoolim. Mentions my book (BEYOND TIC-TAC-TOE!), STEPPING STONES, TRIPPPLES, G&P, ARMOR, THREE MUSKATEERS, KING OF THE CASTLE, STACK-UP, THERE AND BACK, UP WITH THE KING, DOUBLE, HAAR HOOLIM PERCEPTION GAMES. Enclosed repros of ARROWS board and rules, STEPPING STONES board and rules (actually a spare rather than a repro), KING OF THE CASTLE rules, 1950 newspaper column with CHECKERS variation by "Victor Dremon." Sheet with Hebrew listing of Or-Da games.
In connection with Felicia's admonition to make FOUR-ARMED BANDIT fun thinking of a "Lotsa Luck" variation using dice. The arms are numbered from 1 to 4 and two dice tell you arm(s) you can take from.
Downtown to meet Alex Randolph at his hotel.
He asked if there have ever been dice with chess pieces on the faces. He is interested in patenting this feature. Told him that they have been used at least once. He has a game, STEEPLECHASE which Ravensburger is doing. It is a race game but the pcs. move as chess pcs. according to the throw of a die (or is it 2) with chess faces. There are obstacles on the board including a river which can only be crossed with a knight's move. There are also (I believe) portable obstructions which can be moved under certain circumstances. Each player has 3 pcs. & 2 to 4 can play.
MAD MATE is the new name for NEOCHESS, put out by Selecta in Germany.
He showed me MIMIKRI. There are 2 sets of 16 cubes and there is
a chess pc. on one face of each, except the king (I believe)
appears on 2 opposite faces. Players take their king and 7 other
pcs. and set the at random and set them up in their home
row also, I believe, at random. There are two ways of playing;
1) the symbols face the opponent. A player attempts to move a
pc. and opponent tells him whether its a legal move. If not,
the turn is lost. 2) The symbols face the player. (Not sure
if this is complete, or completely accurate.) This is being put out
by 3M of Germany which Alex says is much more on the ball
than in the U.S. Incidentally he saw Keith Tuggle in St. Paul.
Tom Atwater is taking a job as a dean of the business school in a University in Spokane, Washington. He will try to keep up with his agenting from there.
Alex showed me a so far unpublished puzzle he calls NUTLINK. There is a holder in which 6 pcs. - circles with segments cut
