APRIL 1975 - WEDNESDAY 9
99TH DAY - 266 DAYS TO COME
Call from Felicia. She is going to try TRAVELINE with Western. She heard from Bob Johnson. He said that FOCUS did well in their in-house testing, but it was at the bottom of their outside testing. He said that he felt badly about not using any of my games. I said that he also didn't keep his promise to send me copies of FIITING & PROPER and THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS. He told her he was sorry about that too.
He told her that the games that they will be introducing next Feb. from Ravensburger: MIX-MAX, RONDELLA, and CATCH THE HAT! (FANG DEN HUT!) are children's. QUARO, QUADRATA, COLOMINO, JOCKEY, BARRICADE, ISOLA (he called it "Isolu"), and REVERSI (he called it "Reverse") are family games. (All of these are in my Ravensburger catalog rcd. 12/5/74. In '74 Misc. folder.) They will also do Alex Randolph's POTWORD (which is undoubtedly the same as POT in '71 diary and TOO BAD in '67 diary.) Bob said that word games are doing well. Hallmark will also have BACKGAMMON, CHESS, and CHECKERS.
Felicia tried to contact Kohner-Gabriel. She found out that Harold Frankel is no longer there - he quit before they fired him. She contacted Albert Stubbman, who is still with them. But he doesn't know which direction they will go in. Felicia will try to contact the head at Gabriel, who used to deal with Alice.
She heard from Ron Weingartner of E.S. Lowe. They played JACK POTS 6 a lot and finally decided that it didn't have enough interplay. She asked if I should do it over and Ron said no. He said, however, that he'd like to see more of my games, and he'll be in at Stationary Show.
He is also returning B-O-C-Q. It is not their thing at all. What they are looking for are family gambling games - standards with some twist.
She wrote a cover letter to Edu-Cards on THE WINNING TICKET, TOGETHERNESS, and OVER 'N OVER, etc. She'll call them at the end of the month.
Thinking of a GAME based on getting little cards with the symbols on a one-armed bandit to win pots. As a player takes a card he chips a number of chips on the card to a pot next to the card. (To be worked out.) TV GUIDE GAME, under another name and with other cards, is another possibility for E.S. Lowe.
Rcd. a letter from Walter Luc Haas, a copy of one he sent to
Dr. Phillip Gaskell concerning James Joyce and LABYRINTH (see
3/3). A copy was also sent to Heiner Zech. In the letter he gives
him a number of leads, but no definitive answers. He also mentions
a number of repros enclosed. He mentions me as a possible lead.
HAVE YOU FILED YOUR FEDERAL INCOME TAX REPORT FOR 1974
AND ESTIMATED DECLARATION FOR 1975?
In a separate envelope Walter Luc Haas sent me the following repros:
6-pages from a German book which seems to be on mazes, at
