3 MONDAY - MARCH 1975
62ND DAY - 303 DAYS TO COME
Call from Felicia. She asked if we rcd. an advance for THE BRAIN GAME (TAKEOVER!). Yes.
She offered Alan Newman a copy of TOTALLY but he refused it. All of his friends are game buffs, but none will play number games.
Alan doesn't want to show anything to Hasbro since they don't pay royalties - and he has so many things out for consideration. I said that Alan could afford to be independent since his wife is working as a teacher. Felicia said he has his problems.
Call from Martin Gardner. A reader from England wrote and asked him about a German game, LABYRINTHE, that James Joyce was supposed to have played with his daughter in the 1920's. A chapter (#10, I believe) in Ulyssis derived from this and compared Dublin to a maze. I checked and couldn't find any reference to the game and Martin asked if there was anyone in Germany who might know. Gave him Heiner Zech's address (see 12/24/74). He'll send it to the fellow in England.
Did final drawing for VASARELY tear out and pencilled in the one for KLEE.
In bed thinking of ideas for solitaire games to use in books in
addition to NO WAY, FITTING & PROPER could be done by
giving a layout of holes and then listing the req'd. trominos [drawing of upside down uppercase L in blocks]
to cover them - such as all of 1 kind, half & half, etc. then some
thing similar to QUADRILLES with dominos could be used. Also
HONORABLE RELATIONS - the puzzle.
Also thought of something that could be called CROSSWORD JIGSAW A crossword puzzle, without the numbers, is cut into pcs., that can fit together in many ways. Use trominos, dominos, squares, etc.
