FEBRUARY 1975 - TUESDAY 18
49TH DAY - 316 DAYS TO COME
Call from Jerry D'Arcy D'Arcey. He is in New York and we arranged
to meet at Fifth Ave. Bldg. at 1.
Met Howard Wexler at Press Room. To Edu Cards showroom and
Shelly Lieberman and exchanged greetings. He is now president of Ed-U-Cards.
A gal showed me his games and we played most of them. FOURTHOUGHT
is exactly the same as my FOUR except that it is an 8x8 field and the
blocking spaces are fixed. TAKETEN is played on a SCRABBLE - type
using tiles numbered from 1 to 9 and also some "wild." Players
start with a rack of tiles and they are played in lines adding up to
ten (diagonally not counting). No partial group of 2 or more is allowed.
If a line ends on a "bonus" space give a tile to an opponent. When a
player plays out others score their remainder. (I think.) STANDOFF -
each player has a set of cards - from 1 to 12 I believe. Another
4 cards have one 13 and the other 3 O's. At start each player
takes one from there. (Howard said that when 2 play only a 0 and
a 13 are used, but the gal and I thought that using an extra 0
is necessary for the uncertainty. Another set of scoring cards,
from 1 to 13, are turned one at a time and players "bid" with a
face down card from their hand. In case of tie for high, noone gets
those points. (There may be some kind of bonus, but I can't recollect.)
Pegs are used for visually indicating the used cards. WORD FOR WORD,
played with letter cards. Each player shuffles his pack (how
divided?) and turns up a card wh in turn. Cards are placed
between the players. When a player can form a word with his
card and some from the center he takes those cards. (The gal
said that only the player turning the card can take the word, but I
felt it would be more exciting if the first to form the word can
take it.) CATCHPHRASE - Players ge a player takes a phrase from
240 provided and the others try to get it by guessing
letters. (Don't remember the details.) Took 2 catalogs and pictures
of Howard's 5 games - which I later discovered were not in the
catalog. (Filed pictures in '75 Misc.)
Spoke to Howard and he said that he has been having trouble selling toys in the past year but has done o.k. with games. He does all the games himself since he finds them easy to turn out. He'll only act as an agent on something unusual, not on this type of game. He said that he'll be concentrating on toys this year and I said I was glad since it means less competition. He said that competition is good and now that he has convinced Edu-Cards to do family games there will be a market for all of us.
The gal who showed me the games said that she and her husband love games and just to call on them if I need to test a game. She took my card and I took her number: Elise & Robert Caputo - JU 6-6300.
- At Press Room Ted Erickson said that according to his check the "Gamut of Games" listing was correct. Bill Dodge (the inventor of NILE) was there and he recognized me. He hasn't been able to sell anything since that game. Asked me to give his regards to Felicia.
- Invicta. Stopped for a moment and gave Lee Gelber my review of ESCAPE FROM COLDITZ CASTLE.
