FEBRUARY 1975 - SATURDAY 8
39TH DAY - 326 DAYS TO COME

Worked out an illustration for SPRINGER.

Finished up a rough set of cards with new PROFIT arrangement.

Call from Graeme Levin. Just arrived (and liked the Seville Hotel). Made date for supper tomorrow.

Played SPRINGER with Phil Laurence. It could have resulted in both of us being blocked, but Phil missed the opportunity and I made a chain.

Played PROFIT with the new cards. Started with $1,000 each and, with bankruptcies the money was tight. BB was almost broke at one time, but later picked up to 2nd - or 3rd. Quite cutthroat.

We played ORGANISMS and he liked it. He asked if he could have a fixed starting position, since beginners had no way of telling what to do. (Later decided to mark a position on the board, allowing advanced players to vary it.)

He'll try to place it in England and in Germany, where he has connections. (Felicia wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.) We discussed the fact that there are so many games in Germany. He said they are dropped quickly if they don't sell. I said that it would be terrible if the German companies started licensing in the U.K. and the U.S. He said that only Otto Maier was willing to license. The others want to try to sell themselves. Discussed my column on "The American Scene." One point; he doesn't want to give addresses of manufacturers - let them ge take an ad if they want it known - but he will allow it for strickly amateur publishers, if the reader's can get a good deal.

Graeme wanted to set up a date with Martin Gardner and I called. Not in but he called back. Set date for 2/20 at 8, there.

He was visiting Martin Kruskal's mother, who has something to do with "Flexigons," and Bob Abbott was there. He played EPAMINONDAS and enjoyed it more than he thought he would. Scribners is simultaneously doing THE SIXTH BOOK OF MATHEMATICAL DIVERSIONS FROM SCI. AM. in hardcover and paperback. They are putting the FOCUS board on the cover.
