16 THURSDAY - JANUARY 1975
16TH DAY - 349 DAYS TO COME
Looking, but no new games.
Rcd. a notice from U.P.S. that a package from Aladdin couldn't be delivered. (Discarded.)
Rcd. a letter from Bill Rawlings. Thanked me for my S&T review of his book NON-CHESS GAMES, RULES FOR PLAYING BY MAIL. Mentioned NOST. He's working on a book of CHESS variants.
Rcd. two copies of the contract from Fabio Coen.
(cont. from 1/17) [2/18]
Jerry's and we exchanged cards.
Jerry told me that Parker is taking over BLOCKHEAD.
He had the following with him: REVENOOERS (by Erik). Something like BEAT THE BORDER - with booze instead of pot. MONLITH, EYE WITNESS - (by Hans Goldschmidt) the player looks at a card with a picture of a "criminal" for a short period. Then he looks at sets of different features - eyes, nose, chin, hairline, etc. From each he picks one and takes a matching plastic overlay. When the picture is completed it is compared with the original "criminal." KRABO - a BINLO variation but didn't get any details. POUNCE - a feedback game. A large quadrille is marked with 1 to 4 in most of the spaces. Also some bonus spaces with 10 to 50. A player moves in a straight line (including diagonally?) as many spaces as the number the preceeding player landed on (what happens if he landed on a bonus space?) play until some total of bonus landings. (Rough idea.) Also Jerry's own EASY COME-EASY GO and YIN-YANG, which is MAH JONGG with new pictures and terminology.
Jerry, Dorothy, and I were all very depressed over the chances of making a living from freelance game inventing.
David Kribs came in and I introduced everyone. He offered me another copy of BEAT THE MARKET, which I declined with thanks. [illegible strikeout] I noticed a package addressed to [drawn bracket] Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith [drawn bracket] 62 Beachwood Terrace [drawn bracket] South Yonkers, N.Y. I checked with Ted and Sutton-Smith is a consultant to the T.M.A. and is o.k. with Ted if I contact S-S [Sutton-Smith] about Avedon's "Game Museum."
- Cadaco. Jerry, Dorothy, and I went there. I spoke to Dan Monahan
and he showed me SHERLOCK HOLMES - didn't get details but it seems
a pretty simply matter of locating where a magnet is hidden under
the board. WHATCHAMACALLIT (which is licensed from England) - a
category is chosen and a spinner is spun to get a letter. When a player
thinks of a word starting with that letter he throws his colored
marble into a box. If there is a question of who called on thought of
a word first, the marble in the recess at the bottom of the box
settles it. There was a box with THE ECONOMY GAME on it and little,
if anything, more. Dan said this was a European (German) game and they are
not sure if they will be doing it.
