8 WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 1975
8TH DAY - 357 DAYS TO COME
Letter from Paul Greeneough. Nothing on games. Catalog from Publishers Central Bureau has A TOY IS BORN for $1.49.
Call from Bob Gellman. He decided not to do WASHINGTON. He asked if I had any other games complete, preferably one that had been dropped by another company. Told him that they were all abstract - which he doesn't want. I suggested FOREIGN INTRIGUE but he said no.
We were talking about trademarks, since he wants to trademark PATTON and MACARTHUR, and he told me some of the names he came across in their search for WEEKEND IN VEGAS. BIG CITY WEEKEND (1960), VEGAS VACATION (cancelled), VEGAS 21 (Ideal), COMPUTER VEGAS - and then he was called on another phone.
Bob Champer over to pick up his check for $611.74 for PATTON and MACARTHUR. Told him of WASHINGTON being cancelled (but we keep the advance). He suggested ROMMEL and said that he could come up with the outlines of the 3 scenarios, [illegible strikeout] in a week. Told him I'd check and he'll call me tomorrow.
Call from Sister Marie Magdelan, Mstr. Scanlan H.S., 915 Hutchinson River Parkway, Bronx, N.Y. 10465. She bought a copy of TAKE FIVE and the rules were missing. She couldn't get anything from Renwal. Told her I'd send repros after I returned from Rome.
Jerry D'Arcey called from the airport, rented a car, and came here for supper. BB, he, and I played his TOP DOG. There are 12 plastic dogs, which can sit up when thrown, but not too often. They are thrown from a shaker in the shape of a bone. Each one that sits up counts 10 points. Those not sitting can be thrown again, but if none sit up, all score that turn is lost. 120 points (at my suggestion) is game. As a solitaire - a player has 21 throws to get all the dogs sitting up. He'd like to put it out himself, but can't raise the $5,000.
The game he is working on is like ODD ODYSSEY but Jerry claims
to have come up with about five play principles - while ODYSSEY has
really only two. He would like to sell the equipment for $40
with one game and each additional game at $5. Tho it is not
his decision. He is on retainer and will be for a few more
weeks. I suggested, and he liked, his getting royalties on
the replacement games - so he can keep putting out new ones.
Didn't get details of his games GAMES.
Jerry and Frank Thibault think that M.B. [Milton Bradley] stole Frank's idea in their CONNECT FOUR, and that he won't show anything more to Richard Harris. Also that Jim Houlihan had something to do with "borrowing" the ideas. I pointed out that Howard Wexler is getting royalties on the game.
Jerry seemed discouraged about games in general.
Jerry made a number of telephone calls, including some to California. Offered payment, but then forgot about it.
