18 MONDAY - NOVEMBER 1974
322ND DAY - 43 DAYS TO COME

Call from Herbert Baus. He is a friend of Warren Buell's and he corresponded with me in '65 and '66. He sent me info on two games then - ARMAGEDDON and GOLDEN SPRIKE.

He was in New York in connection with a huge x-word puzzle dictionary he is doing for Doubleday. While working on this he came up with a word game he calls wither SPELLBINDER or SPELLEPS. (I told him of my SPELLBINDER and the conflict with SPELLBOUND. The play is on a 17x17 board with 47 of the spaces marked with letters. There are 102 tiles, divided in strict proportion to their use in English. Play is as in SCRABBLE, except that letters already placed can be rearranged as desired, as long as all adjacent letters form complete words. A word scores the square of its length, and there is some kind of bonus for putting a tile on a matching space. (Told him that the only original feature was the rearranging of letters.)

Since he wasn't a nut I gave him Felicia's number. He'll talk to her about SPELLEPS and the other two. His address: [drawn bracket] Herbert Baus [drawn bracket] 1110 Cactus Drive (714-327-6360) [drawn bracket] Palm Springs, CA 92262
