10/12 15 TUESDAY - OCTOBER 1974 288TH DAY - 77 DAYS TO COME
Met Pierre Berloquin at his hotel and then by subway to 14th
St. went over to book stores in that area, ending with
Barnes and Nobel. Pierre bought some $40 to $50 worth of
books, mainly on puzzles. For an column article in a newspaper
or a magazine containing one puzzle he gets about $50
so one idea will pay for all the books. (He bought about
$15 worth in Sylvan.)
Actually after B&N we went to "Libreria Hispanica-Librairie de France" which is a branch of the store at Rockefeller Cener, but much bigger. I bought JUEGOS DE MESA for $2.95. The games are mainly simple except for two expansions on BATTLESHIPS - LA GRAN EVASION and LA ISLA DEL TESORO.
Earlier on 4th Ave. I bought a booklet with tear-apart cards for learning Russian, called LEARN-A-LINGO (other languages were also issued (copyright 1945). Rules for two games were originally included, but are missing.
At "Speakeasy Antiques" - 799 Broadway, New York, N.Y. (533-2440) saw a box with DOG FIGHT. The rules were missing and possibly some of the planes. They want $6 for it. Didn't buy. (At home checked and found the rules in "Parker Archives" material.)
Left Pierre at the subway station near his hotel.
Before meeting [illegible strikeout] Pierre called Felicia. Told her about the letter from Carol Peterson (see 10/12). She asked if I would write to Carol with the story. O.k.
Told her about PATTON and MACARTHUR and "House of Games." At first she was annoyed and then said if Gellman wants $50 off the top it is alright with her.
Called Phil Orbanes and discussed the FREAKIES game. I'll bring it to him early next week.
He is interested in mystery games and asked about seeing THE CASE OF THE ELUSIVE ASSASSIN, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, and FU MANCHU'S HIDDEN HORDE. I promised to bring the rules for him to reproduce next time I come there.
Call from Robert St. Cyr. The big company still hasn't made up its mind. Among the games he took - they love TRAVELINE, like AIRLINE a lot, and his partner loves FREE FORM. They tried LOTTERY and didn't like it as much as the others.
Called Martin Gardner and arranged to get there tomorrow at 2 (and later arranged to pick up Pierre at 1).
Letter from Haar Hoolim. Enclosed copy of a letter he sent to "R.C. Bell" about a CHESS set. Describes a LAP variation he calls PAL. Mentions UP and a new GAME developed from it. Mentioned STACK-UP, ON GUARD.
