Another had MORPION SOLITAIRE. MORPION is an old French game similar to GO-MOKU. It is played on a large quadrille field. A player [drawing of board with "x"'s] scores one point for each line of 5 completed. Also if he makes one or more lines he gets another turn, and can continue indefinitely. Play to some set score (I believe). In a straight line, a new line can only use one space that was previously used (so that there must be 9 in the row for a second line to score). The solitaire is played on a field marked as shown. Player marks an empty square that completes one or more lines and continues as long as he completes at least one each time. Object is to fill as many spaces as possible. A variation that allows for [illegible strikeout] more spaces is to allow one more move each line formed on a turn, and these can be accumulated. (This is never used in the competitive game.)
Pierre showed us his book 100 GRAND REUSSITES. About 8
or 10 of these are Pierres own solitaires. One I read over
is called LES TRIOLETS. A layout of 4x4 is made, groups of
A group of 3 is taken off, each a different suit and
each a different rank. These are placed in a face-up fan
in order of rank. The empty spaces are filled and another
group of 3 are taken. the order of suits must be
different (4x3x2 possible arrangements) but the
ranks can repeat a previous group. Object is to
remove all (except 1 I guess) of the cards. (It might
be more interesting to make a layout of say 8x6 -
eliminating kings - and a group must be taken from a row
or column.)
He has only one copy, which he will show to
Kenneth Heuer of Scribner's on 10/23. Unless Pierre will
send us each a copy of the book - unless Heuer doesn't
keep this copy, in which case he will give it to one of us.
(Incidentally I met Heuer in '71.)
