7 MONDAY - OCTOBER 1974 280TH DAY - 85 DAYS TO COME

For my S&T column finished THE INVENTORS, then did PRO DRAFT, PRIZE PROPERTY, KING OIL, THERMOPYLAE, THE UNGAME, LETTER PILE, MACARTHUR, (with mention of PATTON), DOUBLETAKE, and ESCAPE FROM COLDITZ CASTLE. Shorten the part on NON-CHESS GAMES a little and ended with it. (Ran 1020 words instead of the 940 used for my column in #46.)

Called Mannie Lefkowitz and made date to bring him TWICE AS HARD Thursday.

Call from Pierre Berloquin with the time of his flight:- 3:55 on 10/14.

He spoke to Martin Gardner and arranged to go their either on 10/15 or 10/16. Told him I'd set up the details.

Called Claude. date this coming Thursday. He's working on another game game (later told me the tentative name was RAZZLE DAZZLE) which he'll tell me about. He has HASBRO in mind.

In compiling the book, Pierre found a book of 100 original solitaires in a Paris library and used some of these.

Looked through Martin's pile of JOURNAL OF RECREATIONAL MATHEMATICS quickly. Found the following: THE QUADRANGLE GAME (Winter '74 - Col. 7, No. 1), On a quadrille layout a random number and layout of dots is made, with the dots in the centers of spaces. 2 players in turn draw rectangles. A rectangle must separate at least two dots that weren't separated before. Sides of a new rectangle may superimpose lines previously drawn. Last to draw a rectangle wins.

HIT AND RUN (Apr. '68 - Vol. 1, No. 2). A [drawing of a board] layout similar to that shown is used. Players in turn connect two circles. One player tried to connect 2-V circles, the other 2-H circles. (Seems trivial as a game, but they used it to analize this type of situation.)

Martin gave Pierre some of his books and also gave me a paperback copy of THE SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN BOOK OF MATHEMATICAL PUZZLES & DIVERSIONS. This is the first of the six SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN books. I now have 4. The 6th - SIXTH BOOK OF MATHEMATICAL DIVERSIONS FROM SCI. AM. is coming out in paperback next spring. The other is on "Dr. Matrix."

Martin rcd. a letter from Bob Abbott. He says he has a wonderful new version of ELEUSIS. Also the greatest board game - which turned out to be EPAMINONDAS. I told Martin that is just an expansion of CROSSINGS.
