6/28 JULY 1974 - THURSDAY 18 199TH DAY - 166 DAYS TO COME
Call from Pierre Berloquin. He is working with a French weekly newspaper LE POINT on a series of 6 game inserts for their summer editions - each 8 pages. He thought that TRIPPPLES was mine and wanted to get permission to print. one layout. There is a payment of about $60. I gave him Alice McElhone's number & he'll call her.
I asked about LES SIDOMINOS and he said that the company is doing the art work on the game and it still looks encouraging. They won't sign a contract until they are sure they want to put it out.
He said he was doing well. I told him that I had had pneumonia but he didn't seem concerned. Actually since the paper was probably paying for the call he couldn't spend too much time. He and Annie will be in New York around the middle of September. He promised to send me a long letter soon and I promised to answer at one.
Call from Bob Gellman. There is a very good chance that MACARTHUR will be handled by "The MacArthur Museum" which is somewhere down south. They take only things that are specifically about MacArthur. If they take the game it should sell some 1,000 copies a year, and maybe some more by mail order. He has placed 1,200 copies of PATTON in the PX's, but was too late with MACARTHUR.
A big order of all his [illegible strikeout] games is in trouble with "Toys R Us" since they are close to bankruptcy.
In a week of two he is sending me six each of MACARTHUR & PATTON in the bookshelf format. I asked for a review copy of WEEKEND IN VEGAS and he'll send me that in place of one of the PATTON's.
Bob wants the 3 battles for WASHINGTON by the middle of September, so that he can have a box made and not miss chances such as the PX's.
He'd like another game of mine for '75, not necessarily a war game, but definitely not abstract. I suggested LOTTERY, or rather THE WINNING TICKET. He is afraid that it might be competitive with his WEEKEND IN VEGAS. I also suggested FOREIGN INTRIGUE, saying that it was being considered - but probably will not be accepted, since the company is more interested in abstract games.
In connection with abstract games, Bob said that he wouldn't know how to sell an abstract game. Later he said that he thinks that VECTOR is a great game and has been trying to by Play B from Eric Naiburg for two years, but Naiburg won't give it up.
An inventor from Israel brought him a game based on terrorism in Israel, North Ireland, etc. - called ANARCHY. I thought it was too downbeat. He objection was that people forget about those things after awhile.
The inventors of MOVIE MOGULS (Ken Morgan and his partner) brought him another based on horror pictures and using
