128TH DAY - 237 DAYS TO COME
Wrote a short letter to Hayward Cirker of Dover about AGOG.
Wrote to Allan Calhamer about NAVAL GAME and S&T.
Call from Felicia. Mike Riley has a math game - SHINGLES -
which she'd like me to look at. Made a date for next Monday at 2.
Deposited the Hallmark check and the AGOG advance check in
Dollar Savings Bank. The latter came to $252.50.
To Martin Gardner at about 3. Lillian Silver there and we
discussed possibilities for exhibits at a Xerox puzzle exhibit
till about 6, when I drove her to the railroad station. She
wanted to get together with her tomorrow but I said that I'll
be too busy. Also I have to settle financial details with Bernie Lane.
He won't be back in town till next week and she is leaving at the end of this.
Back to Martin's. He told me that he was getting $100 a day from
Xerox as a consultant, and that he determines what constitutes a day.
Martin returned my copy of PIONERSKAJA IGROTEKA that he
borrowed on 12/6/73. He sent some puzzle books to Marek Penszko
(see 2/8) and will be getting a copy of PIONERSKAJA IGROTEKA
among the exchanged. This is probably the same as the book
Penszko called IN ONE'S OWN TIME (really??).
Returned the material on DODGEM and SERPENT that I
borrowed way back on 9/30/72.
Brought along 101 BASIC COMPUTER GAMES to show Martin. Offered to
loan it to him but he said that he'd get one himself.
Martin gave me a copy of a letter from Stockholm with a game
POLYMERASE. (At home discovered that one line was missing.)
I asked for and Martin made repros of his column for 9/73
for me . SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN.
Took along Lech Pijanowski's PRZEWODNIK GIER and Martin made a
repro of Lech's game of TANGRAM. I also brought my 1972 diary
and Martin made repro of diagram for my game of TANGRAMS (3/22/72).
Martin invented two games based on the concept of "Snug" fits
in Tangrams - which means that sides that touch are of the same size,
(that is hypotenuses are against hypotenuses and match in position,
etc.) and the figure is solid.
SNUGGLE UP. Start with a "snug" figure of 3 or 4 sides, 2 play
and in turn move a pc. so that the figure is still snug but there
is more sides. Player who can't do this loses.
SNUGGLE DOWN. Start with 18 sided figure and reduce number on
a turn.
SNUGGLE UP & DOWN. Start with a "snug" figure of 10 or 11 sides.
One player tries to increase the sides - up - the other to de-
crease them - down. Score 1 point for the each unit of movement
in your direction. First to reach 25 wins. A player also wins if
the opponent cannot move in his direction on a turn. And, finally
the game is won by reaching either 18 or 4 sides.
I told Martin I'd try the games for him to see if there is any
comments he should use in his column. There is over a month
