4 SATURDAY - MAY 1974
124TH DAY - 241 DAYS TO COME
Letter from Haar Hoolim with another GAME idea. He enclosed a
copy of a lot of material he sent to Martin Gardner concerning
"Magic Squares" made with his "Chinese Matching Cards" - with
the hope of getting a mention for HAAR HOOLIM PERCEPTION GAMES.
At a bazaar bought 14 yards (a little short of) of black contact
at 20¢ a yard. Also pieces of shiny white and shiny green - a
total of 5 yards - also 20¢ a yard. Bought 48 self-stick wall
hangars at 3 for 5¢. Put some on the wall.
Edith gave me some plastic pcs. (same as I got from her before)
that may be useful for a game. She also gave me a copy of a
small magazine [illegible crossed out] SCHOOL VOLUNTEER NEWS with an article
on a volunteer project for packing educational word game kits in
stocking boxes. Among the games that were made up especially for
this project: THE THREE LAYER JIGSAW PUZZLE, WORD BASEBALL,
RACE TO THE TREASURE. (Filed in '74 Misc.)
(cont. from 5/8) [5/8]
till he needs it.
Martin showed me John Horton Conway's game of FOOTBALL. It is
played on a GO board. A black pc. - the football - is placed on
the center intersection. Players in turn place a white piece on
any intersection they wish. Instead of placing a white piece,
a player on his turn may move the football by jumping it over a
single piece or a line of pieces in a row, orthogonally or diagonally
(so the intersections of the GO board are not the best place to play).
If another jump is available it can be made, but doesn't have to
be. Pieces jumped are removed. I asked if they are removed
immediately, or at the end of the player's turn and Martin didn't
have this info. A player wins by reaching the edge of the
board across from him, or by jumping the football off the board
on that edge. (We played and Martin conceded when I almost
reached his goal line.) [Conway wants it kept secret.]
Martin had a pile of his kids games that he was giving to the
Salvation Army and asked me to take what I wanted. Took the
following: EXPLORING (which I threw away except for the 3
piece board which I may be able to cover for something of my
own - the rules were missing); CUBIC (German 4 x 4 x 4 field - no
rules); BEAT THE MARKET (a duplicate for me); ACQUIRE (with some help from
the remnants of the Xerox exhibit have a good spare); BANDA (Alex Randolph's)
Other "Ravensburg" games advertised include LINGUA, DAS BORSENSPIEL,
COLOMINO, FORMA, JOCKEY, ISOLA, 3 x 16, BON VOYAGE, QUADRATA,
SCHASKA; VENTURE; THREE DIMENSIONAL MILL (German. 3 red
and 1 green pc. is missing).
Martin had two other games put away especially for me. COGITO (took
the rules from the M.G. folder). PEARL GAME (with a letter from the
inventor - in Sweden).
