17 SUNDAY - MARCH 1974
THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT - ST. PATRICK'S DAY - 76TH DAY - 289 DAYS TO COME
Thinking of a GAME based on 27 pcs. using all ar-
rangements of 3 colors in concentric circles->.......................[drawing of circles]
I changed it to pcs. with three different shapes
in all possible arrangements of the three colors ->..............[drawing of circle with three shapes]
[drawing of 5x5 board of hexagons] A board is used as shown. When 2 play each takes
13 pcs. and the 27th is placed face up in the
center as a starter. Players in turn place a pc.
next to one or more already on the board. At
least two of the color/shapes must match. If
4 or more match player gets another turn.
(Possible alternative:- get one extra play for each match over
2 - but matches in the over two in the bonus plays do not
count.) First to play out wins. Or if all play is blocked, player
with least pcs. wins. Probably can be played by 3 and 4 also.
Possible name - HEX-MATCH. (For "Coffee Break" line.)
Call from Martin Gardner. He was working on another book of
his SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN columns, including a puzzle on a
"rolling cube" (11/65). He just rcd. a letter from someone in Aus-
tralia with a description of the Whitman game RELATE and
he asked if I had it. Yes, and I dug it up and called him
back and cleared up a few points for him.
I asked him if there was any chance of the his book with
FOCUS going into paperback. It is going out of print in hard-
cover but they are having a problem getting into paperback since
the hardcover was published with double columns, which is not
good for paperbacks.
Barbara Heine called him several days ago and told him I was
sick. She is having more problems with the ESQUIRE layout.
He thinks that she was a poor choice for this article.
The Australian (who is not familiar to me) also sent Martin
a description of another game which I recognized as SIGA
the name he gave.
Playing around with WIRETAP a little.
(cont. from 3/18) [3/18]
and POLAR COORDINATE GO. Mention of CONVERSION CHESS. In his
other column Phil gives rules for his CROSSINGS CHESS and
SURGE CHESS. In his first column he mentions that
SEMI-CIRCLE CHESS is simply CHESS on a warped board.
Ralph Betza gives rules for CHESSGI (a combination of
occidental CHESS and SHOGI). Also rules for SHATRANJ. Also
mentions LOA and gives part of a game.
