Mailed the material on ZIM (COGITO) back to Martin Gardner. Deposited the Hoi Polloi check (WORDPLAY, etc.) in Dollar Savings.

Decided to differentiate between companies in THE BRAIN GAME by giving bonuses to some of them at random. Finally decided on $12,000 - $9,000 - $6,000 - and $3,000 - and made a small markers.

Rcd. [received] letter from Graeme Levin. Mentioned AGOG and CARTEL specifically, and others by inference.

Bob Abbott showed his ELEUSIS variation. Two 52-card decks are shuffled together (which seems sufficient for [illegible strikeout] 5 guessers - 8 6 were playing Bob, Claude, Anne, me, BB, and Earl - Issy Rothman couldn't make it since Betty was sick) and about 7 (can't remember) cards are dealt to each guesser. The creator puts out 1 card as a starter. Players in turn play a card. If correct it is placed in line and the player gets another card from the deck. If wrong it is placed face up "off-line" and the player does not replace the card. A player can play a string of 2 to 6 cards. If anyone is wrong the entire string is placed "off-line" but 1upped[?] to show that they had been playing together. If all right they are put in line in regular manner and player gets back cards depending on number played: 2-3, 3-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-9. When a player runs out of cards each remaining player scores for each card he holds. Same each time a player runs out. Also when deck is exhausted score for each card and game ends. Creator scores same as highest scorer.
I had a rule that a black card could not be played if sum of
the last 2 cards was odd. Worked good.
Claude showed TEN LITTLE INDIANS using many of the suggestions
I gave him last time. I still don't like the extraneous
point system and the fact that there is just about no chance
for deduction.
I pla showed THE BRAIN GAME using the bonus cards. Earl,
Claude and Anne said that they liked it. It was stopped
before it ended because Bob got tired and he was driving
Claude and Anne to subway. I decided to lower the amount
of money at start - to $85,000 when 5 play and $70,000
when 6 play to stop one player from hogging too many cards
with high throws on the red die.
