JANUARY 1974 - THURSDAY 17
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BORN 1706 - 17TH DAY - 348 DAYS TO COME
Call from Felicia. Leonard Willett was there. He had notes on the
games that Felicia had given him and that he had played over the
holidays. One of the women said that FITTING & PROPER required an
I.Q. of 235.
Rcd. PLAYTHINGS (Jan. '74). Noticed that Owens-Illinois has changed the
name of SUPER SLEUTH to SUPER SOOTH. News item that Marvin
Glass had died at 59. Randolph Barton has been elected head of
the TMA. Article on Dr. Howard Wexler, saying that several of his
products will be marketed by Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley, Leisure
Dynamics and Hasbro.
Showcase listed SPACE HOP, TACTICS II (containing no cards,
dice or other chance elements they say).
Itemation had an ad for ENERGY CRISIS GAME.
Rcd. a call from {Barbara Heine
{Esquire Magazine - (212) 759-3232
Dorothy Shapiro told her about me. She is preparing a piece on
Father's Day's gifts for the June issue. Talked about different
classifications of games. She mentioned gambling, strategy, word,
and war. I added business and sports. Dorothy talked up TRIPPPLES
(which I seconded) and the Gameophiles games - FLIP AND FLOP,
SYNTACTICS, PENTAGON (which I didn't second too much). She also will
include FRENCH MONOPOLY. She said she wanted "classics" and I men-
tioned ACQUIRE, SLEUTH, and BALI, for war games she is familiar with A.H.
and I gave her S.P.I.'s number to check on their "classics."
She asked me to call if I thought of any other "classics." Called her
back and told her about STRATO-TAC-TICS, JOTTO, BRIDGETTE, and VECTOR.
In the earlier call I mentioned TWIXT as a strategy game.
Rcd. a call from {Linda Francke
{NEWSWEEK magazine - 350-2412
She heard about me from Mike Alber and from Madge (I believe) at S.P.I.
Linda is doing a piece for next week's issue on games about lying, cheat-
ing and stealing. She knows LIE, CHEAT & STEAL and BEAT DETROIT.
We also talked about DEALER'S CHOICE and MASTERPIECE. I mentioned
WATERGATE SCANDAL,THE but she didn't seem interested in it. She
asked me some questions about games reflecting society, etc. Also she
asked if I knew a psychiatrist who could tell her about it. No.
I told both of the girls about my collection and both voiced interest in
sometimes doing a piece on my me.
Barbara said that she would get in touch with me when they were ready
to photograph the games. (ACQUIRE and SLEUTH?)
When I mentioned that I do a column for S&T, Linda got the numbers in
which I reviewed some of the games we discussed. She'll send a messenger
to pick them up, to save her studying the rules.
Claude called. At Macy's he saw WORLD COMMODITY FUTURES TRADING marked
down to $2. Luckily he didn't buy it. He did get a set of the
French rules for me. Claude saw another stock market GAME unfam-
iliar to him, but didn't get the name. Not much comment on his meeting with Wald.
