5 WEDNESDAY * DECEMBER 1973
339TH DAY * 26 DAYS TO COME

To Brenatno's abt. [about] 11:30. Bob Gellman not there. Dorothy Shapiro called Bill Tyler about her not knowing being informed about the demonstration. Bill's assistant - Larry? - came down and said the president of Brentano's yesterday walked thru the store and blew his top over the demonstrations going on, and said no more demonstrations until after X'Mas. [Christmas] Went upstairs to Larry's office and called Bob Gellman. Not in and then he came there as I finished. He was mad about the demonstration being cancelled without be our [being] notified, but Larry didn't take any heed of him.
Bob wanted to talk to Bill Tyler - "to say hello" - but he was in conference. Bob invited me to lunch and I suggested "Chock-Full-of-Nuts". After we ate Bob asked if I minded going "dutch". No.
Back to wait for Tyler. Bob told me that he wants the artist to start working on the MACARTHUR box and he has to have the battles we will use. Told him I'd have it by 12/17 and he'll call me then.
Bob said that he'd like me to look at a game he is considering putting into bookshelf format - together with PATTON, MACARTHUR, & a gambling game - possible name GRAND CASINO. It is a CHESS variant played with cards to determine which pc. [piece] must be moved, named NOVINKA. It was brought to Bob by the one who wrote Bobby Fisher's [Fischer] biography. I told Bob that I knew of another similar game (CHESS WITHOUT TEARS). He wanted me to tell him all the details but I said I'd contact Gary Sherbell to contact him. I also told him that no CHESS variant had ever sold.
He made a quick estimate of the number of PATTON sold and said the check, which he'll send in about 2 weeks, will be for about $1,600.
Got tired of waiting for Bill Tyler and went down to game dept. [department] Looked at games: Skor-Mor: - 5IVE STRAIGHT; this is undoubtedly the same as 99 (see 5 x 3 card file) - the board is the same as the one on the second card except that the "X" space is replaced with an "O". YESTERYEAR - move a long a board and answer questions. PRIME TIME. (Didn't look in any of the Skor-Mor packages - shrink wrapped.)
WORDMATE (Family Toys, Inc. - Boonton, N.J. 07005). Letters with point values show at windows - abt 15 or more in a row. Apparently the whole alphabet on each. (Again couldn't look inside.)
University Creations Inc. INVEST, which at home I discovered was the same as a game published in 1958 by "Research & Promotion Co.", and that Phil Orbanes gave me. ROADBLOCK; there are 16 wood pieces, 14 [drawing of a square, bisected vertically with the right half bisected horizontally] and 2 [drawing of a square, bisected vertically and horizontally]. These are put at random in a 4 x 4 frame, except that the 2 "+" pcs. [pieces] cannot be next to each other (including diagonally?). There is a plastic overlay with a number of U.S. cities, located so that they are in the quadrants of the pcs. [pieces] - no more than 1 in any quadrant. A number of "trips" including different nos. [numbers] of cities are noted. Each has a basic score and a bonus per move for solving in less
