Call from Martin Gardner. He was at an antique show in White Plains and saw the following games and wondered if I'd be interested: - CHIVALRY (for $16.00); TELEGRAPH BOY (board only for $10.00); HALMA, STEEPLECHASE (with large horses - for $45); several old German dissection puzzles - like TANGRAMS - for $10 each.
Thanked him but said that I wasn't interested in any of these.
Arranged to call him when he got home.
Called Martin. He gave me the address of one of the dealers at the show who said he had other board games:

He and Charlotte have been going to a lot of antiques shows and also have been traveling around visiting shops and also book stores. There is a very good one in Catskill, N.Y. where he picked up some rare children's games at bargain prices. He picked up a HALMA game, one of the originals, with a booklet of rules that included a number of problems based on minimum number of moves to get pcs. [pieces] into final position. He'll be able to use some when he expands his column for the book reprint.
Told him that all I could find on CHINESE CHECKERS was that it became popular in the 1930's.
He has some games he is saving for me. One I am pretty sure is the one I saw in Verhulst's column - HEUMANIA TIC-TAC-TOE. Two are by Odier - one being LE TRIOKER no doubt and the other being similar with square pcs. [pieces] I'll contact him after Thanksgiving about my driving over there.
When in Penna. [Pennsylvania] he picked up a game for $1.00 which was supposed to be an old game. This may be MINI-HEXCHECKERS.
He has seen card games in the antique stores but hasn't paid much attention to them since he didn't think I'd be interested. I said I would be if it wasn't just another variation of AUTHORS. He has seen SHERLOCK HOLMES in a few places at not very high prices. If he sees it again he'll pick it up for me. He did get an original UNCLE WIGGILY board for 25¢ which he will give me.

Call from Claude. He wants to know if there was any word on KOHNER. Tod him of Felicia's call.
