Rcd. a letter from Les Martindale of Waddington,
rejecting TAKE-A-WORD.
Started thinking further about TAKE-A-WORD as a puzzle-game
[drawing of board game] This board could be as shown and 30 letter
discs could be used to fill the spaces. Each disc
has two letters - of different colors, or one
upper case and one lower case, one set could
contain the difficult letters while the
other doesn't. The game could be played
using one set of letters or the other, or allowing both
together. The puzzle would use the two together and the
idea would be to take off as many discs as possible.
POST had an article on various odd-ball courses given
by "the New School" including on [illegible strikeout] "Board Games of
the World." (Filed in '73 misc.)
To [illegible strikeout] simulations. Ran off 61 sheets of the "Hex" graph
paper I drew up years ago.
Spoke to Sal and told him about ESCAPE FROM COLDITZ. He showed
me some "feedback" returns on game suggestions. Some people
rate a "Rip-Off" GAME and an "Escape" GAME highly. If
enough do, he will prepare the games.
Asked about the missing part in FOXBAT & PHANTOM and was
told that there is an error. There are only two sheets of
planes. (Later confirmed that there are English and French planes
on the two sheets I have.)
Took copies of PHALANX and NATO, SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN and
BULL RUN are not ready yet.
Spoke to Redmund. He doesn't think he'll have any problem
getting my full column in S&T #40.
Spoke to Jim Dunnigan and he doesn't mind if my review of
EXECUTIVE DECISION is run in G&P without change.
He spoke to the president of Midwest Research who said
something about sending me a "Basketball Game." I already
have their NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION PLAYERS BASKETBALL GAME
(SEE 6/21/72). The president also asked about my column not
being in #39.
To "Gamut of Games." Phil showed me the article on selling
games in THE CAPITALIST REPORTER. There are some inaccuracies,
such as attributing MASTERPIECE to M.B. However I asked Phil
for a copy and he'll have it made at Reiss.
The worst of the five p&p games is CHINESECHEK which is
running about 15% under NINETACTOE, WORDPLAY, DAMN-IT!, and
VEGAS 13, which are pretty much neck and neck.
Watched Phil & Nick play a game of LAND BARON. (See sheet that
I took with me.) Players in turn throw 3 dice and pick 2 of
them to give a total corresponding to a "property." First to choose
a property owns it but must pay the purchase price. Each
