24 Friday - August 1973
St. Bartholomew, Apostle - 236th day - 129 days to come
Rcd. [received] NOST-ALGIA #160. Some of the pages were blank but
from the index I determined they were not things I
needed - mainly CHESS.
Phil Cohen mentions SECRET WORD, CRASH, SINKO, UNCRASH,
LOA, AGOG.
A new column by "Betza" says that in the future he will
give rules for the following original games: HIGH-LOW CHESS,
CONVERSION CHESS, WEAK!, ULTIMATE ULTIMA, METAMORPHIC CHESS.
Rules are given for XIANG-QI (CHINESE CHESS).
Also rules for DOUBLEMOVE CHESS, which was invented by
Fred Galvin and appeared in NOUVEAUX JEUX D'ÉCHECS INTÉRESSANTS.
Rcd. THE GENERAL (Jul. - Aug. '73). Articles on LUFTWAFFE,
WATERLOO, KRIEGSPIEL, MIDWAY.
Charlie, our postman, told me about an article in NEWSDAY about a game. He'll give it to me tomorrow.
Fixed up the letter to Gini Scott and BB typed it.
Wrote to Don Turnbull. Mentioned DIPLOMACY, PATTON, HOLIDAY,
FITTING AND PROPER, THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS, ALBION, ACQUIRE,
REALM, MONTAGE, CARTEL, INFINITY, ATLANTICA, GAMES WITH PENCIL & PAPER,
ELEUSIS, SUBTERFUGE, COURIER.
Working some more on THE 31ST HEX, trying to get a different solution with each kind of pc. [piece] in the center.
Thinking that PUSHOVER would fit well in the puzzle-game format,
if I can come up with a puzzle.
Also TAKE-A-WORD is a possibility, again if I can come up
with a puzzle and can reduce it to 32 pcs. Also I'll have to
write to see how it is doing with Waddingtons.

"target number" was 6 but this was almost always exceded.
Then Claude changed it to 10 which was a little
better. However the rest of us found it rather dull,
which annoyed Claude.
Bob brought along EPAMINONDAS but decided that he didn't
want to play it. (Incidentally, I believe that Bob told me
that he agreed to give Graeme Levin 50% to place it
agent it in England.)
Bob wrote (or is he writing) an article for G&P on
BABEL. He agreed to do it free to advertise his book
ABBOTT'S NEW CARD GAMES in hopes of selling some thru mail
order. Now Graeme wants to order some at wholesale to
sell himself. (Bob was a little annoyed that I rcd. £15 for
the article on ACQUIRE.)
I asked and Bob explained how ELEUSIS was done in the
