16 WEDNESDAY - MAY 1973
136TH DAY - 229 DAYS TO COME

Rcd. NEXUS (which is admittedly a variation on TWIXT) from
Jim Faulkner. Letter from Jim says that if the test goes well
he will come out with 3 more games in August: SUBMARINES,
ZEX-OH! (a distant cousin of PAPER BOXING), and a set of
"All Time Great Quickies."
Call from Felicia in answer to mine of yesterday. Told her of my meeting
Sunday to come, with Alfons Rubbens & Earl Doherty. She said they
are a waste of time. I mentioned their connection with Wadding-
tons and she said that that might amount to something.
She has been getting more clients. Through 3M she was approached
by the inventor of OCTRIX. He has a CHECKERS variation that
she wasn't interested in handling.
Wanted to write to Mike Abrams about BLOCK 'N SCORE in answer
to his latest letter (4/30). Looked for his previous
letter and one from Garry Shirts. Spent some time and
couldn't find them.
Called Larry Blandin and he called back. The tape of the
previous year's INTERNATIONAL GAME SHOW seminar on "What
Make a Good Game" is too poor quality to send me. He is
getting a recapitulation by sending a chain letter to the
various people involved. I should be getting it in about
2 weeks.
So far on the panel with me will be Al Calhamer of
DIPLOMACY (who was screwed by Games Research and works
as a postmans - altho a Harvard graduate), Roger Venhulst
(because of my suggestion), and some designers from Marvin
Glass'
organization.
He said that he has been hearing that contrary to most
designers, I have a reputation of being a nice guy. I
asked him who had said so and he said that Alfons Rubbens
and Jim Faulkner had, and there were others.
They will pay the hotel in Chicago for BB and me. Also double
the gas and tolls for the car.
Discussed my seminar - or rather symposium. I should start with
a speech of 5 to 15 minutes, then keep the conversation going.
He suggested calling talking about the leverage outfits like
Marvin Glass carry in getting games accepted - even if they
are not that great. I said that [illegible strikeout] I had heard rumors
about that but didn't have anything but "hearsay" infor-
mation. He thought I could state it as such. But basically
he said he had respect for my knowledge and experience
and should talk about what I know.
