17 Saturday - March 1973 St. Patrick's Day - 76th Day - 289 Days to Come
Rcd. [received] an envelope from Odette Willis with the board and some pieces for L'ANNEAU ENCHANTÉ DE TOM TIT. Also a lot of info on his "30 dice game-puzzle." (TOM TIT PUZZLE, THE)
Odette called and I told her that Vittet's idea was completely different from SCARNE DICE so not to bother looking for it. Told her that there was a 30 cube set in the literature of recreational mathematics. Told her that it was in Lucas' RÉCRÉATIONS MATHÉMATIQUES that Vittet could get in Paris. Later looked and didn't find it in Lucas. Looked in other books and then called Martin Gardner. They are called "MacMahon Cubes." They are in W. W. Rouse Ball's book MATHEMATICAL RECREATIONS AND ESSAYS and at greater length in [illegible words crossed out] NEW MATHEMATICAL DIVERSIONS FROM SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN. Martin already went over and was payed for the manu- script he did for Frank Armbruster on the "MacMahon Cubes," including THE TOWER GAME. He says it is the most complete exposition yet done.
Tried to call Odette to tell her, but no answer.
Looked at THE INVASION OF SICILY in PANZERFAUST #56.
Bob Champer called to ask whether he should incorporate the entire "Battle of the Bulge" in his PATTON game or just the part that Patton personally commanded. Told him to make it as simple as pos- sible. He said he already had a rough map.
Thinking of ideas such as having Italian troops quit eqch time a city was captured. Also having each player in turn throwing a die. The total of this die plus the one the opponent threw before gives the units of movement permissible. A road segment that uses 1 unit can take 3 troops. A 2 unit can take 2, A 3 unit can take 1. Attacking a point from more than 1 direction gives extra points added to the dice throw.
Thought that VIEWLINE might be a good "Family" game for Lakeside - possible name SIGHTS or SEE THE U.S.A. A die could have the 6 sights on it and the artwork could be on the player cards.
Played OVER 'N OVER at the Richters, Brian played with Al. Then I did. The "Force" situation came up, and not in the center space. Decided to change it that a player can call "Force" whenever he leaves the same space vacant. However he can only call "Force" if he has 12 or less pcs. [pieces] with his color on top.
Al showed me Earl's letter on DON'T BLOW A FUSE (Earl would like a jazzier title). Earl's idea was very simple (and not quite clear). Al wants to have a printed circuit (I suggested the silver surfaced type) that is broken into a number of parts. As appliances are plugged in they can help to complete the circuit (I suggested two orien- tations for each plug - some bridging and others not). We came up with a light being lit all the time but when the circuit is completed in draws current to a buzzer, dimming the light.
