11 Sunday - March 1973
First Sunday in Lent - 70th Day - 295 Days to Come
Mark Singer here for about 2 hours, interviewing me for
WORLD Magazine. He says that the emphasis will be on
humor. It should be out about May. He'll let me know when
it does come out. Just in case I took his address:
{Mark Singer [address and telephone number]
He mentioned that Parker [Parker Brothers] had a game ESPIONAGE (I am pretty
sure that is the name) in which there are double agents, men
that the opponent can control by secretly bidding more money
for their services. This came up when I showed him my model
of FOREIGN INTRIGUE.
Tom Atwater told him that Hallmark was coming out with games. After
he told me this I told him that I had two things that were
supposed to be coming out, but that I'd believe it when I see it.
He said that the Urban Systems stock issue just came thru [through].
They have over a million dollars to expand the company—games
just being a part of it.

that will look like a file folder. On one side of the inside will
be the board and on the other side the rules. There will be a plastic
cover so that it can be marked with a wash-off felt tip pen. On
the outside one cover will have a picture of the game and the
other will have a picture and description of the inventor, like a
book jacket. he will also sell a "starter kit" with felt pens and tissues
for erasing. Also a loose leaf binder for keeping the games
He has the first game—NEXUS ready to go to the printer. He'd like
another 5 to go with it. he is using BATTLESHIPS and probably
a group of "quickies" including NIM, BOXES, and [illegible word crossed out] 3D TIC-TAC-TOE.
From my book he is interested in the following:
* LAP - I'll write to Lech about it.
* SKEDOODLE - I'll write to Jim Scully.
* PAPER BOXING - he wants to put allow the "Start" space to be placed anywhere.
Also he is including a scoring area.
* THE LAST WORD - I suggested [illegible crossed out word] adding colored lines reducing the field to
different sizes.
* NETWORK - Wants it changed so that it is not necessary to move pcs [pieces].
* HOLD THAT LINE, CUTTING CORNERS, and one or two others, as another "quickies."
I asked him about PIPS, and that is a different type of game—
for a line with plastic pcs [pieces], fitting into holes. (he wants all of his
games to be playable on the move, without pcs [pieces] being loose.)
NEXUS, incidentally, is something he worked up after playing
TWIXT, But the strategic part starts much sooner.
The PIPS Series will not be ready until next year.
He is going to the Atlanta Toy Show to get buyer reaction and to
try to line up reps. [representatives] I told him about the "Stationery Show"
